Hi Jenny No luck with Samuel I'm afraid. The only Samuel Bayne (Bain) in Lanarkshire is the 5 year old child of a polish family Bain. I have checked the National Index to see if he is in England, with no luck. He's either out of the country, or his name has been mistranscribed. I've tried Payne, no luck. Hi Ellen, I would be really grateful if you would check the 1881 census to see if there is anyone called Samuel Thomson BAYNE(Thomson was a middle name) there. He was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire in 1846. He was either a shopkeeper or a fishmonger (or possibly a fruit merchant) in 1881. He was married but he does not appear to be with his wife at Gilmour St, Kilmarnock on census night. I've tried the 1881 census on the LDS site but couldn't find trace of him. As he wasn't in the matrimonial home on census night I assume he must have been a boarder or visitor elsewhere. He may have been staying with his mother who was alive until 1890. I couldn't find her on census night either. Her name was Ellison BAYNE but the christian name may be spelt Alison. She was born around 1810 and had lived in both Kilmarnock and Glasgow. If you are able to locate anyone by the name of BAYNE born and living in Glasgow Lanarkshire I would love to have any details. Many thanks Jenny

On the 1901 census, where did she state she was born? A few options here for Helen (Nellie) - not hopeful that any are right. Again on 1901 where does she say she was born? James Tait - there are 76 within a 5year either way time frame, but only one in Dalkeith, and he's too young to have got married 6 years later. Have put him on here anyway. Again, what info does it give for him on 1901? Where are you getting the info re the 1887 marraige - if its the cert, what are James' parents names, where was he living then? Hi Anne This is really weird - I can not find any of them on 1881. I've checked the rest of Scotland too. I'm going to check the National Index now to see if they moved to England. I'm mystified as I can't even find the lodger, Letitia. With such an unusual name for Scotland she should be easy. But of course she may have married between 1871 and 1881.
