MCKENZIE Hi Ellen, It's very kind of you to help other people in your spare time. I have been searching for info on my gr gr gr grandparents children. Firstly, I will give you what I know of the parents. Alexander McKenzie married Ann Melville or Melvil on 22.6.1828 in Glenisla Angus. I don't have d.o.b.'s. They had 5 children. Jannet ch 4.9.1831 Glenisla - Angus John ch 9.3.1834 Auchinleish - Angus TWIN GIRLS Catherine Wilson b.3.7.1839 Alyth - Perth Isabel Robertson b. 3.7.1839 ' ' Duncan 3.5.1842 ' ' That is all I know about this family except that Catherine Wilson married Robert Ritchie on 3.12.1857. Robert was born on 1.4.1830 in Either Kennoway or Markinch in Fife. Will you be able to find out where these children were in 1881? I know I am asking a lot of you, but I wondered if you would also be able to help me with my gr gr gr gr grandparents children. The parents were: William Ritchie & Mary Wilson. They got married 15/12/1805 in Monimail-Fife. No d.o.b.'s. William ch 21.7.1806 Monimail or Markinch John ch 26/8/1810 Markinch James ch 29/8/1813 ' Margaret ch 3/3/1816 Scoonie Andrew ch 17/7/1818 Kennoway Feorge Forbes ch 15/7/1821 ' Alexander Henderson ch 31/12/1826 Markinch Will you be able to find out where these children were in 1881 if they were still alive? I would be grateful for any help you can give me, Ellen, and Thank you once again. Kind Regards Katherine - nee Ritchie |

Hi Paula You are right - this is not an easy one! Couple of questions first: What information do you have that leads you to believe Peter's birth year is c.1860? Similarly how do you know he was a tailor? Also - I take it you mean that he met your great grandmother in 1912 in London, not your grandmother? He would have been 52 by then, is this correct? Bearing in mind I do not have answers to the above at present, here is what I am considering: 1. There is no Peter Anderson (leave the Hendry bit aside for now!) in Scotland in 1881 who is a tailor or tailor's apprentice, of the right age. 2. There is one in Fife, Scotland born 1864 - does not seem a likely fit with the limited info so far. 3. There is a Peter Anderson born 12th June 1862 (not on the 1881 census), who was born in Tain, Ross & Cromarty, but whose birth was registered both there and in the district of Elgin. Morayshire used to be Elginshire, and Lossiemouth would be in the district of Elgin. 4. His parents are John Anderson, a Coach Builder Journeyman, and Mary Anderson, ms, Malloch. 5. John and Mary were married in Edinburgh on 1st June 1857. 6. There are two other children to this couple, Jane Ann Anderson b. 4th October 1859 in Elgin and Mary Anderson b. 24th September 1866 in Kelso, Roxburgh-shire, which is in the south of Scotland in the border region with England, so the family are moving about a lot. 7. There is a Peter B Anderson, born 1862 in Scotland, living as a lodger in Clerkenwell, London, who is a Clothier's Assistant. (close to Tailor or maybe went on to become one?) Dwelling: 7 Farringdon Rd Census Place: Clerkenwell, London, Middlesex, England Source: FHL Film 1341076 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 0350 Folio 109 Page 18 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Elizabeth A. ANDERSON U 19 M Scotland Rel: Lodger Occ: Clothiers Assistant All a bit tenuous, but as far as I can get without a bit more info. Can find nothing on either the Aberdeenshire connection, or the middle name Hendry. It is possible that Peter was born illegitimately to a mother with the surname Hendry, and registered under that name, then took his fathers surname of Anderson, but will do no further investigation till I hear from you in case I go searching up blind alleys! Regards Ellen. |

Hi Ellen, I was wondering if you could look for any Sherriffs for me in Inverkeillor, Angus? I have a lot of ancestors there in the early 1800's to 1820's but then they just disappear. I know some moved to Kirkden but the rest are dead ends. I'm hoping some will show in the 1881 census that may give me a new lead. Thanks David. |

Sorry Ellen should have said. Just discovered William and Christina's marriage on IGI, it was in 1835 so they will be older than i thought. I'm guessing that they where still alive by 1881 because they are not said to be deceased on Johns marriage certificate unless he was lying but i dont see why he would. Mhairi |

Hey Ellen Can i ask for you to search for the following please: John (1853 Drainie) and Jane Ann Robertson (1860). Most likely to be living up at Pitlochry or the surrounding area. William (c1830) and Christina Robertson (c1830) also living up in the Pitlochry area or maybe Drainie. William (c1830) and Jane Ross (c1830). Might be living with daughters Margaret (1862) and Isabella (1866). Both daughters where born in Forres, Morayshire so i'm thinking they might be in that area. William Fraser (1863 Errol). Might be with parents John (1835) and Margaret (1836) if not could you search for them separately. Thanks Mhairi |

Hello Ellen Would it be possible please for you to look up my Gt Gt Grandfather GEORGE SOMERVILLE born in Scotland. He was 'deceased' on his son's, JOHN CHARLES SOMERVILLE, marriage cert in 1894. John was aged either 23 or 28, that hopefully should give a rough idea of how old George would have been if still alive in 1881- at least 30 I guess.(although maths not my subject!) GEORGE moved to Holborn area of London later. The name has many variations unfortunately! eg SOMMERVILLE, SUMMERVILLE, even SOMERVEL etc Thanks Alison |
