Derek There are only two MacKenzie families with a Robert/Elizabeth partnership. This is one, although the they are both a little older than you were looking for, and not born Renfrewshire. The other two are much too old at 50 and 47 years, and the Mary thats with them is described as 'neices daughter'. Here's the one anyway. I hope its of use: Dwelling: Damsburn Census Place: Logie, Perth, Scotland Source: FHL Film 0203508 GRO Ref Volume 374 EnumDist 12 Page 29 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Robert MC KENZIE M 35 M ..., Clackmannan, Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Mastman Eliza MC KENZIE M 34 F Kincardine On Forth, Perth, Scotland Rel: Wife Occ: Mastmans Wife Jane MC KENZIE U 11 F Kincardine On Forth, Perth, Scotland Rel: Daur Occ: Scholar Mary MC KENZIE 5 F Menstry, Clackmannan, Scotland Rel: Daur John MC KENZIE 6 m M Damsburn, Clackmannan, Scotland Regards Ellen. |

Hello Zena Where have you looked? I found quite a lot of info very quickly on scotlandspeople. If you invest in a few credits, you will soon get moving on this one. The fact that John Sutherland has Dewar as his middle name is the first clue to explore. I checked scotlandspeople for a marraige 1880-1910 for a marraige between a Thomas Sutherland and any female surname Dewar in Latheron Parish (includes Dunbeath). Only one hit - Thomas Sutherland married Robina Dewar in 1885. If you pay the 5 credits(equivalent of £1), you can look at the actual image, and it will give you both Thomas and Robinas parents. I then looked for a birth of a John Dewar Sutherland between 1885 and 1910 in Caithness, Latheron - only one hit. Looked at the actual image, and sure enough, born to Thomas Sutherland and Robertina Dewar (don't worry about the slight differences in the spelling of her name, happens all the time). Born 1898. Forgot to write down the date etc, but have the image saved and will e mail it to you if you send me your e mail address by private message. Bonus - the birth cert gives the date of Thomas and Robertina's marraige 13th November 1885, so we know the cert I found noted above is the right one. So I'd follow the same procedures above on scotlandspeople with your other names and you'll soon fill out that tree. Remember to open out your mind re the possible dates. eg. you gave me Thomas senior as born around 1875, when actually he's probably born around 1860-1865. Your John Dewar is unlikely to have been Thomas and Robina's first child. Hope this helps. scotlandspeople add is www.scotlandspeople(.)gov.uk Remove the brackets. This must be Rob(ert)ina on the 1881 census (pre their marriage), unfortunately not with her parents. There are a few possible Thomas Sutherlands, but when you look at the marriage cert and get his parents, I can check the 1881 again and probably find them for you. Julie If you invest in a few credits for scotlandspeople, you're going to be able to trace this family quite easily. I looked up scotlandspeople for the marriage of Alexander and Sarah, looking for 1885 - 1894, and got it straight away. I have the image and will e mail it to you if you send me your e mail address by private message. Alexander Wright Hodge, age 21 and Sarah Ann Augusta cummings, age 20, were married on 1st November 1889, at North Leith (Edinburgh, Midlothian). Alexander's parents: F = Robert Hodge, Factory Stoker M = Agnes Hodge, MS, Wright Sarah's parents: F = Edwin Cummings, Stevedore M = Marion Cummings MS Raleigh (deceased). Then I find them each on the 1881 cesnsus with their parents and siblings ( Sarah's mum already deceased). CUMMINGS U 10 F Newhaven Rel: Daur Occ: Scholar Jane MILLER U 41 F Newhaven Serv This should give you a good start. Now you need to register with scotlandspeople (.gov.uk), and you will be able to trace backwards for the parents marraiges & deaths. Best of luck. Ellen. |

No trace of Charles in Scotland in 1881, sorry. the only one is born 1826 in Ireland. Checked the National Index and don't seem any likely candidates. (checked the b.1822 in Scotland one in Durham - not him). No trace of any of the children in Scotland either, but of course the girls are likely to be married by 1881. Here are a couple of possibles (I stress possibles!) for Robert and mother Margaret: Dwelling: 1 School Houses Census Place: Earsdon, Northumberland, England Source: FHL Film 1342229 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 5088 Folio 68 Page 23 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Robert HILL M 29 M Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Coal Miner Mary HILL M 25 F Scotland Rel: Wife Ellen HILL 4 F Earsdon, Northumberland, England Rel: Daur Mary HILL 2 F Earsdon, Northumberland, England Rel: Daur Christina HILL 1 m F Earsdon, Northumberland, England Rel: Daur Auty ROBERTSON U 28 M Scotland Rel: Boarder Occ: Coal Miner Agnes WRIGHT U 19 M Scotland Rel: Serv Occ: General Serv Dwelling: 70 Church St Census Place: Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland, England Source: FHL Film 1342238 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 5129 Folio 137 Page 18 Marr Age Sex Birthplace Margaret HILL W 64 F Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Seamstress Best of luck.
