Ordering certificates... you can search on 1837 or ANCESTRY, you need the name, year, month/quarter area and the reference which will be something like 7b 422 When you have these details you can order the certificate from GRO costing £7.

General board... everyday subjects are discussed Tips board... what to do next, website reccomendations etc Records board... ask for people to look up info or offer your records you hold Trying to find board... looking for relatives, alive or deceased.

As has been said before, when you asked for help, please stick around. Or say you'll be back later. ANCESTRY Has England and Wales census 1841-1901. Also has births deaths and marriages 1837-1983, although not a lot after 1900. Is a subscription site, so people offering these look ups are paying for the info.

Carolyn, the only way to check you thread is to click on 'view my threads only' click all replies and then 'latest reply', it quite a lot to do just to pick up your answers, or just keep an eye on your thread as it moves up and down the board, but we don't all sit here all day to do that.Perhaps filling in the survey on the homepage might have some effect of to how it will work in the future. On the tips board put in text box, 'tips for newbies' or 'best website'list you should get some useful tips, if not put a thread on the tips board asking for help. HC

Leah, I didn't realise it was wrong to do that. I have done it a few times in the past, can't type fast, would take me ages. Better watch my step. Would be worth putting it on its own thread to warn people because I know a lot do it. Gloria

Just wanted to add a bit about COPYRIGHT. I've not seen anything on here that mentions it already, so here goes... When doing look-ups on sites such as Ancestry.com, be careful not to copy info from there and paste straight into the boards at Genes Re - it is a breach of copyright. Unwittingly, I did this on another site with help forums and got a good telling off for it. Well - I didn't know it was wrong. But I do now... Apparently, it is ok to write the information down and then retype it up in your own format - but not to directly copy and paste anything (which I have seen quite a few Genes members doing). Best be safe than sorry...no doubt at some point in time we'll see Ancestry and other sites getting tough and start suing us if we're not careful. Regards, Leah

Be as clear as you can with the info you are asking for. Say what info you already have to save people going over the same thing again. Don't worry if they seem trivial questions--we all have to start somewhere. Gloria

Sometimes when a person posts a question, it may not be replied to. This happens especially if you are asking for a look up on a very early census. It may just be that the people who could help are not looking at the board at the time. As other people add questions, yours moves further down the page, until it goes over onto page two. To bring it back to the top of the first page again, you can nudge it. You do this by clicking on add reply and just writing nudge. That way it brings it to peoples attention again. I think the word nudge can sound a bit sharp, so it may be better to just add a little message, asking if anyone can help. Please don't be scared to ask, we were all new once and we do want to help you as much as we can. Linda

Patricia NUDGES when you add a reply- like i am doing now, the thread will zoom back to No1 spot on the board...sometimes people add just the word 'Nudge' in order to get it to do that, say, if they are looking for more info if i do this , and then delete my reply so the thread has seemingly zipped back to the front for no apparent reason it is known as a phantom nudge. - this has the effect that no-one knows who made it zip back there and can stir up trouble if it was a argumentative thread that gets resurrected Jess

If someone replies to your thread with a request for further information - e.g 'What was Sarah's maiden name?' - PLEASE reply on the thread and not by personal message. Sometimes I help lots of people so if it is a day or two before you come back to me, and your message just reads 'It was Smith', then I usually have no idea what you are talking about! Plus if you reply on the thread itself, if helps anyone else that may be trying to assist. Sam x
