Sue, Only have access to census indexes, so can’t help much, although am interested in the search going on on your behalf. This is just an observation. Do you actually know that Evan was born in Bethnal Green or somewhere else in the London area? I know you are looking for an Evan s/o John, but I presume from the postings that you don’t actually have a birth reg or cert for him. 1) As he was married during the war, and was a driver in the forces, is it possible he was based in London, but not actually from there? 2) The head of the Camberwell family is provision merchant in 1901 – would this equate with the John labourer on marriage cert? Jay

I wonder if it is Evan down as nephew , with Morgan and Elenor Davies Anyway, managed to find certificate This is of one of his son;s born 1921 states born 390 High Street, Evan Davies father, occupation Labourer L.C.C. plus something else I can't decipher, residence 43 Ladywell Road Lewisham Gosh, this turning into a right mystery!!! Will we be able to solve it? I honestly don't know where Evan was borb, was under the impression Wales. What I will try and do this week is to try and get over to Hertford to see if I can find anything on his obituary, there might be something you never know. What I do know, Evan was in The Salvation Army for many many years, as I remember my dad saying he used to go round with them, in Welwyn Garden City. Yes have queried, but unless he was an officier and was active they would have been able to help. so got no where. Time for bed, fresh start on this tomorrow!! Goodnight and thank you all for your interest and input.. Sue

Is he definitely Driver ASL on his marriage cert, or could it be ASC (Army Service Corps)? There are a few Evan Davieses on the National Archives Documents Online WWI medal index cards who were drivers for the ASC (put 'driver' in the 'other keywords' field when searching, because there are hundreds of Evan Davieses!) Though I'm not sure how you'll work out which is yours. If you do work it out, then the index card gives you reference numbers which you may be able to use to find his army records at Kew - but many of them no longer exist. Assuming it is ASC or at least that he was in the army, you may be able to track him down through an entry in the Great War Roll of Honour (I think it is) though there seem to be a lot of volumes for London and not sure how you would know which volume he should be in. Got to go to bed now. Good luck! Kate.

Kate Got back out of bed!! needed to think about this situation. Yes you are correct, it was not Lewisham County Coucil as a Driver, IT IS A.S.C Driver, with something else, same as when he married in 1916 Would be great if we found his records, but would not know how? must get back to bed!!! Good night ps maybe my gaurdian angel might solve this for me during the night and leave it on this thread, well I can dream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sue

Just to confuse this all together!! Have had a second opion on Evan's wedding certificate, and where it states eank profesion, Under Driver A.S.C. is MINER So that would mean he WAS born and worked in Wales and became a Driver when called, what do you think? This mystery deepens!!!! Sue

McDitzy

McDitzy Report 15 Nov 2005 14:44

I'm confused.... how could someone born in 1858 be 10 years old when they have a son in 1885?? Surely they'd be 27 years old.

Susan

Susan Report 15 Nov 2005 14:57

Looks like must have followed wrong family!! But still age does not tally though!! Sue

Kate

Kate Report 15 Nov 2005 15:01

Susan - who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate? Kate.

McDitzy

McDitzy Report 15 Nov 2005 15:06

Is it just me, or why would someone be 10 in 1885 when they are born in 1858??? as for the age not tallying on the death cert, the informant could have guessed at the year of birth, or they could have lied on the marriage cert.... why do you seem to be ignoring this advice?

Susan

Susan Report 15 Nov 2005 15:06

Witnesses were Ethel and Elsie Maisey, Winifred's sisters, so we know we do have the right couple. Sue

Kate

Kate Report 15 Nov 2005 15:14

Oh, I was hoping one of them would be a Davies. Maybe you can find something on the electoral roll for 7 Lansdowne Place or 43 Ladywell Road? I just think that you need more information to find the right family on the censuses because both Evan and John Davies are such common names and the father's occupation doesn't help much either. But the question is where you can find that information?! Kate.

Kate

Kate Report 15 Nov 2005 15:22

Just had a look at the London suburbs post office directory for 1919 but there is no entry for either 43 Ladywell Road or 7 Lansdowne Place. I'll see if there is anything for another year. Kate.

Susan

Susan Report 15 Nov 2005 15:25

Kate after they married they lived in 84 Tressilian Road, SE4 was told it was a posh area!!

Kate

Kate Report 15 Nov 2005 15:30

No entry at either address for 1918 either... nor 1917...nor 1916. Not much point looking before then, I don't think, and Historical Directories doesn't go past 1919. You might have to try the electoral roll, though if you find him he probably won't have any relatives with him anyway. Kate.

Kate

Kate Report 15 Nov 2005 15:34

Okay, trying Tresillian Road in the 1918 directory now... blimey, it must have been a posh area, the only 'hit' I've found so far for that road is in the 'Court Directory'!! (not a Davies, needless to say). I'll get back to you if I find anything... Kate.
