Fern Report 16 Dec 2005 21:35

Hi Mary, I don't know whether you can help me but I would like to take you up on your very kind offer. My great, great, great grandfather was called Samuel Govier born 1837 in Bideford/Parkham, Devon. His father was called James and died before 1867. I have found him as far back as the 1871 census but any further back and I hit a brick wall. I have even thought that the name might have been Glover and changed to Govier through poor spelling. The reason I come to this conclusion is that the only Samuel I have found born in 1837 in Bideford, Devon with his father called James was a Samuel Glover. I really could do with a fresh pair of eyes. Many thanks. Fern.

Hi Kathy E A search of the 1851 census gives over 120 male Grundys born in Lancashire between 1843 and 1847,none of which were born or living in Liverpool or Everton. At least 40 of those found were called John, which seems to suggest that Grundy was a very common name in Lancashire at the time of the census. The 1861 census gives a similar result. Sorry I cannot be more helpful. Mary

Hi Steve I could not find Susan Kelly on 1861 census.Have you considered that she may have remarried? I have found a Susan Woodmason on 1861 living in Stoke Damerel (where Susan Kelly was resident in 1851) married to a John Woodmason. In 1851 John was married to Mary, not Susan. I have saved the image for John in 51 and for John/Susan in 61 if you would like to see them PM your email addy. I think the possibility of a second marriage is worth looking at. Regards Mary
