Find Ancestors

Joyce Your grandfather baffles me. He shows on the CWGC site, but there is no recorded medal card for him, which I assume there should have been. Kew blocks access to several sites now and I did not have the time to check, but might he also have been recorded on a commonwealth website, say Australia. Time ran out, but I can check WO 363 for a service record on a later visit.

hello eb my dad told my mum he was in the australian army for 15yrs he was offered apension than it was 6pence aweek he told them to stuff it,anyway after he died in 1954 my mother got in touch with australia house and they said they couldnt find his records that was 1914,so as im his daughter and only child how would i go about finding out,but what puzzles me is why the australian army when he was born in london,hope you can shed some light on this mistery and thank you even if you find nothing.joyce from holland

Hi, Thanks for trying, anyway. I don't think the researcher would have had the same problem as he was supposedly an expert, but I think he was just confused by the fact that he hadn't taken notes of (or printed off) any of the information I had given him and just went by the name of the person! Anyway, I have tried googling the reason given on the card, but unfortunately, because it is 'article' something (and the number of the article isn't very clear anyway), all I get is articles about the first world war, rather than whatever articles governed the forfeiting of medals! I have tried posting the medal card up on the 1914-18 forum a couple of times but got very little help there. I don't really want to go into details on here but Reginald's personal life during the war was rather busy(!) and I wonder whether the forfeiting of the medal (and its reinstatement) would be connected in any way with everything that he was up to. Anyway, as I said, thanks for trying. Maybe one day they will put all the rest of the WW1 stuff online and make it easier for us... Hope you get your internet access back soon. Happy new year, Kate.

Hi Kate The medal roll is a learning curve for me: I had not looked at it before. I misread the reference and ordered the wrong volume. The correct reference is: WO329/2485. However, if the volume I looked at is anything to go by, I think I can see the problem that your researcher experienced. I checked two other medal rolls and in those cases the reference from the medal card takes you straight to the roll. The roll appears to be compiled of lots of returns, all bound together. In the case of the Army Service Corps, there is no page numbering that runs throughout the volume. The finding aids do not indicate any key and it looks as if one would have to work through the volume (which is as fat as a dictionary), looking at every page. The problem is compounded by the fact that a few of the returns do not list the men in alphabetical order. Have you tried Googling the reason given on the medal card? It looks like a standard reason, presumably wrongly applied. Sorry to have to admit failure!

Just to let everyone know that I have been to Kew. I did as many look ups as I could cram in and I will post results while I can still read my handwriting, but I've only just got my laptop back, minus most programs, all emails or any internet access. Currently I can only access GR at work, so please bear with me for a few days.

On Mercantile Marine Reserves Service Record for WW1 Horstead, J, Leading Fireman 13 S.S.S. 791125 Medals earned ST, V, B issued S. Served on HMS Rollcall. For all that (and I paid a researcher for this one!) I havent been able to find his WW1 record as mum and auntie always said he was at Battle of Jutland, it would be nice to confirm. Many thanks.

Thank you so very much for the offer it would be really fantastic if you could find details of my ancestor GEORGE BISHERY. born 19.10.1832. I have details of him from the Crimea war. His number was 3057 Pte. 48th Foot(Northamptonshire). Wounded at Sebstopol 5.11.1855 also shows as Slight Wound, Minor action at Sebastopol 25.07.1855. I am hoping there are details of the solders and the service they did at Kew. This info came from Wartimes Index. Living in Norfolk it is not easy for me to get to Kew. Many many thanks Irene

Frank William Ashman has 2 medal cards: Medal card of Ashman, Frank W Corps: Worcestershire Regiment Regiment No: 29992 Rank: Corporal 1914-1920 WO 372/1 Medal card of Ashman, Frank Williams Corps: Worcestershire Regiment Regiment No: 29992 Rank: Corporal 1914-1920 WO 372/23 The first one details his entitlement to the Victory and British medals – they are under roll L/102.B and page 145. The second card refers to his winning the Military Medal. I know that very few of these records survived the WW2 bombs – but the references are as follows: Registered Paper 68/121/822 Schedule Number 224593 If you are able to get any more details then I would be most grateful.
