Yes Mary, the Woods were relations. William (Henry's father married Elizabeth Wood). I am not sure if he was in the army or not, is there any way I can check that out, if that is the case, it would explain his absence on the 1901 Census. |

Helen, I KNOW it was his father on the 1901 .............. I'm not that daft!! But it does help to trace what has happened to the family!! Also .................... don't be so quick to dismiss that birth registration. I would send for the certificate, and see who the parents are, and the mother's maiden name. You just might get a surprise!! Ages as given in censuses and on marriage or death certificates is only as good as the person's knowledge. They can be as much as 5 years out ...... if not more!! It is not unknown for peple to lie on marriage certificates ......... increasing or decreasing their age by significant amounts. |

If he was age 1 in the 1881 census, then he was born 1879 or 1880. Kath. x |

Did Henry/Harry work on the railway? There's an Alfred Quarrell on the 1901 census living in Long Eaton, Derby. His age is 22, born Birlingham, Worcs. He's a railway shunter. Could his second name be Alfred and he's going by that? Or am I clutching at straws? Margaret |

In that case then Kath, that could possibly be his birth that was registered in Pershore in 1879. I might send for the birth certificate to make sure. Thank you Helen x |

Louise, Kevin Asplin's site doesn't give everyone who was in the Boer war. My grandfather isn't on that site and I know he was in the Boer War as I have his army record. I think it only lists certain regiments. Kath. x |

Yes Syvia that was his mothers death recorded in 1897. I had found that entry. I just wish I knew where Henry was in 1901! |

If youre certian that the family in 1881 census is the right one, then you could give his parent's names as a checking point when ordering the birth certificate, but i would take bets on it being the right one. Kath. x |

Margaret, Yes he did work on the railways, his marriage certificate gives his profession as Parcel Router and at the time of his son's marriage he was a Railway Inspector. But I am confused about the name, I haven't come across that one before, I have only know him as Henry Quarrell though. Helen x |

Perhaps Alfred is just a mistake and he is Henry. My grandmother is on the 1891 census as Elizabeth when her name was actually Ethel. Took me ages to realise it was her. Kath. x |

Sylvia and Kath, Yes I have just checked for a birth for Alfred Quarrell for that year and couldn't find one. I have also checked my tree and found two Alfred's but neither of these are the one on the 1901 Census in Derby, the age difference is too great, and they are accounted for elsewhere! It possibly is my Henry then on the 1901 in Derby, taking into account the occupation and birth year. I suppose we will never know for sure. Thank you all for your lovely quick replies, it has been greatly appreciated. You all do such a wonderful job on here and are invaluable. Time to switch off now and chill out a bit, I have been sat here researching for the best part of the day. Thank all once again for your invaluable help and support. Have a nice evening.
