Karrie, if you still have the records, any chance you could look for a couple marrying before 1802 (first child) - names have been anglicised but if you could look for the surname - Andrew Edroff, a tailor of Stepney. Wife is shown as Hannah or Anna. Kids baptised (which is a concern!) in St George in the East, Stepney. Variations of the name are Edroff, Edriff, Eddif, Edrop etc. Can find no sign of them at all before the baptisms. A contact has been to LMA and they just seem to appear from nowhere - she has trawled back through St George in East and surrounding parishes but the parents marriage isnt there. Many thanks. |

Hi Karrie Thanks for your offer. Does the name Kalthoeber, or similar, occur in your book? They were originally from Lieberhausen, near Cologne in Germany and came to London in the late 1700s. I'm not sure if they were Jewish, but an old aunt of mine said some years ago that there were Jewish ancestors on my father's side, so just enquiring. Thanks in advance. Ron |

Jewish marriages after 1850 (and indeed after 1837) should appear in the GRO indexes. I know that there are some Jewish marriages from the Great Synagogue on the IGI because I found them once, though I can't remember how! I also know that some Jews were married in private houses, instead of the synagogue, so you would only find them in the GRO indexes. Hope this helps some people - and if anyone is tracing Jewish families surname Phillips, Hart or Joel I would be interested in hearing from them. The Jewish lot are in my husband's tree which isn't on GR. nell |

Karrie, hope you dont mind me asking but Im trying to trace the origins of one ancestor and the name is Edroff. Are there any similar names in your book please. There are only a few Edroffs on ancestry and they just appear in early 1800 and all in the East End. Many thanks. |
