Paul Barton, Special Agent | Report | 26 Feb 2006 07:40 |
My great grandfather Stephen (or John) Stewart lived at 30 Meynell Road, Victoria Park. He was already old at the start of the war (he was born in 1869) yet a letter exists from him to his wife from an army camp in Gorleston on the Norfolk coast. He was wth the Transport section of the Middlesex regiment. I don't think he was ever posted abroad but we think he was a driver or something. Presumably they used old blokes like him to free-up younger men to go and fight. [I stayed with some friends in Subiaco, Perth a couple of years ago. You live in a beautiful part of the world.] |
