perhaps the reason he didnt MARRY was because he was ALREADY married????? ie in preston, left wife, had another child with someone else...eventually when wife 1 dies may have married then?? Maybe see if the 1st wife died? still havent found anything yet, Hello Tracey, you feeling better today?? Julie

WOW! This has opened up a whole new outlook on everything. I found something this morning about a James Amer who married early 1900's so there is a possibility this could be the same. Thank you all for your help. I finally feel I'm getting somewhere after getting nothing at all!

If it is the same man it might be likely that the 1906 marriage was his first marriage and one of the reasons he didn't marry a second time is because he was still married to the first one. Divorce was a bit pricey back then and not all could afford to get one. Fiona.

There's a few Henry James' and they're all from London. People didn't put their given names on certificates unless they wanted to. If he was know through his life as James, then he would put that on all the documentation.

Would there be any possibility he was born Henry James Amer as we have found some on the records, but surely he would have to put his 'birth' name on his sons birth certificate?

Hi Fiona Thanks for this. It sounds quite good as I know most of the family lived around the London area and people on this site have mentioned that there are a lot of Amers up North! Thanks

The only James Henry Amer on the Birth register, is the same one who married in Preston. I doubt this is the same man as the father of James C Amer. I wonder if he was registered without a middle name. Update - just seen death reg. Perhaps this is the same man. If that is the case, then he may not have married Margaret at all.

There is a death for a James H. Amer,73, Sep 1951, Dist Harrow, Vol 5f, Page 266. Your dad would have been too young to remember him if this is the right one. Does Harrow sound about the right area? Of course the only way to be sure would be to get the certificate to see who registered the death. There is this birth in 1878 which would tie in with the age at death. Births Jun 1878 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amer James Henry Preston 8e 698 Fiona.

Just spoken to my dad and he doesn't remember his grandfather at all (he was born 1948). Also my dad's father never spoke about him so he could had died before my dad was born!

Fiona Report 13 Dec 2006 12:03

Does he remember his grandad at all? If so can he remember roughly how old he was when his grandad died? It might be that the marriage above was James' first marriage? Fiona.

Kirsteen Report 13 Dec 2006 11:54

No idea when he died I'm afraid. My dad doesn't know much about his family as they weren't very close! I think he's found out more since I've been searching then he ever knew!

Fiona

Fiona Report 13 Dec 2006 11:47

Do you know roughly when James Amer died? His death index would give you an age or date of birth which might help locating a birth ref Fiona.
