Eileen, for the census i suggest that you put alternative versions of the names in. For example, one of my family names is SHELDRAKE, and i know that they were around at the time of the 1881 census, but they dont show up. somehow, they got writen down as SHALDRAKE. Same as the 1901 census, family name BURNAGE, transcribed as BARNAGE (but the original record clearly shows BURNAGE) When you search for your family, put in as LITTLE information as possible... People are frequently recorded as being born somewhere else (my family lore says that although my grandfather SAID he was a cockney, he wasnt really, and that he was born 1901. I have his birth certiicate. He was a cockney, and born 1907). A tip for some of you guys, if you write your surname in capitals, it makes it a lot easier for people to search through the messages (and is the accepted format in family history searching) :o) Lynne |
