Member Since: November 2002 Posts: 21 Send Message	Alison, I'm afraid that we will just have to agree to disagree. I don't believe that it is usual to just trace the male line anymore. I agree that it is easier because (generally) you will be dealing with just one surname. But I really don't see why this paternalist attitude should prevail today. As far as I am concerned I am a composite of all the genes I inherited from both my parents - they are both equally important to me, and so it goes on for each generation backwards. I also take the time to research siblings (perhaps that is a bit obsessive, I agree!) because I am interest in 'family' history - what they did, how they lived, why people moved around, what living and housing conditions were like, how people were affected by various laws....it goes on, and some people will no doubt say that I do to!
