Hi All,
After searching recently and using DNA research and also knowing what we already knew from our Grandmother, I am pretty certain that we can fill in all the blanks for Mary Elizabeth Platts after she left in 1922. I don't publicly want to put it on here for obvious reasons but if you would like this information, please reply or send me a message and I will update you with the facts from what I believe.
Best Regards,
Sandra.

Thanks for the info re 1939 register. i thought that i had found Mary Lizzie Coleman in Bridlington but it is a different DOB. My aunt has said she doesnt want anything to do with the search as everybody tried to find ML Coleman quite a few years back ie Salvation army and other organisations. I tried to tell her that there would have been certain information not available at that time but she wont have it. Its a shame really.
I will keep looking for this relation.

If you have her exact date of birth, you can search for that without using a surname in the 1939 register.
Similarly if she died after 1969, you can search using exact date of birth without using a surname.

Mary Lizzie Platts born in 1899 possibly at Hucknall Huthwaite, Mansfield, Derbyshire, England
Not tried the 1939 yet.
Yes the details for Maria Fowkes/Fawkes is correct. Ive just checked David Coleman, Harry's dad and think he married an Elvina King. I then checked with GRO and her name came up for a Harry Coleman born 1900. Not sure if this is the right way to find Mary and Harry, but if this is Harrys parents it might show if they went south to live.

Yes Patchem you are right. ArgyllGran was mixing up Mary and Maria.
The Maria Rayns Fowkes is not the same Maria, my granny. I have her birth certificate and it states 17 Jul y 1875 and baptism is the same as you suggested. The marriage is the same.
It is her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Platts/Mary Lizzie Platts who Im trying to find. She is not present in most details after leaving home. First indication is her daughter, May, birth certificate (I have a copy of that). Then there's a gap until she marries Harry Coleman, Fathers name David Coleman. I have the certificate for that too. They were both in work. Harry was a farm worker at Scurfdyke Farm, Hutton Cranswick, near Driffield. Mary E Platts, worked as a domestic servant at Corpslanding, Hutton Cranswick near Driffield. I only came across this detail after sending for a copy of the marriage certificate. The only name given was Mary Platts. But it is the same Mary as father was stated as Frederick Platts and deceased.
Mary Elizabeth, in the family she went by the name Lizzie, looks like she came home to Dinnington to have Harold (whi I knew as Uncle Harold) as his birth was registered in Worksop 29 May 1922. This is where Mary Elizabeth disappears again. I've no idea how long she stayed in Dinnington and if she stayed married to Harry Coleman.
I don't know where else to look. Its a shame really because Harold's sons are also looking for her. If anyone has any info that would help me it would be great or any suggestions of where to look next.

ArgyllGran. I think you are mixing up Maria and Mary.
'Maria Shooter should read Maria Fowkes. Maria did not have fathers name on birth certificate. Marias mother, Mary Fowkes, married a Thomas Shooter 1 year after Maria was born hence her using the name Shooter.'
So Mary Fowkes married Thomas Shooter in 1876, so Maria was born in 1875.
Except that Maria on 1901 census born about 1872, which fits with this birth: FOWKES, MARIA RAYNS - GRO Reference: 1872 J Quarter in SHARDLOW Volume 07B Page 368
But this might be her baptism: Maria Fowkes Gender: Female Baptism Date: 17 Oct 1875 Baptism Place: Cotmanhay,Derby,England Mother: Mary Fowkes FHL Film Number: 1041451
Maria married as Fowkes: Marriages Mar 1892 FOWKES Maria Belper 7b 751 Platts Frederick Belper 7b 751

No help with Mary Lizzie, but digressing to her mother, as you say there's no mention of her until 1901, apart from birth and marriage.
Mary Fowkes's marriage record says she was born c1857, and her father was William.
Mary Fowkes in the 1861 England Census Name: Mary Fowkes Age: 4 Estimated birth year: 1857 Relation: Daughter Father's name: William Fowkes Mother's name: Elizabeth Fowkes Gender: Female Where born: Cotmanhay, Derbyshire, England Civil Parish: Ilkeston Ecclesiastical parish: Cotmanhay and Shipley Town: Ilkeston County/Island: Derbyshire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: View image Registration district: Basford Sub-registration district: Ilkestone ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 84 Piece: 2436 Folio: 27 Page Number: 15 Household Members: Name Age William Fowkes 22 Elizabeth Fowkes 23 Mary Fowkes 4 Joseph Fowkes 2 Martha Fowkes 4
Mary Fowkes in the 1871 England Census Name: Mary Fowkes Age: 14 Estimated birth year: abt 1857 Relation: Daughter Father's name: Willm Fowkes Mother's name: Elizh Fowkes Gender: Female Where born: Ilkeston [Cotmanhay, Derbyshire, England] Civil Parish: Ilkeston Ecclesiastical parish: Cotmanhay and Shipley Town: Ilkeston County/Island: Derbyshire Country: England Registration district: Basford Sub-registration district: Ilkeston ED, institution, or vessel: 8 Household schedule number: 57 Piece: 3481 Folio: 69 Page Number: 14 Household Members: Name Age Willm Fowkes 35 Elizh Fowkes 35 Mary Fowkes 14 Josh Fowkes 12 Martha Fowkes 10 Willm Fowkes 8 Elizh Fowkes 3 Ann Fowkes 1
After 1871 she's not with her birth family.
You say she didn't marry Thomas Shooter until 1 year after Mary Elizabeth was born, which would make the marriage 1900. But this seems to be the marriage in 1876:
Marriages Mar 1876 (>99%) FOWKER Mary Basford 7b 142 Fowkes Mary Basford 7b 142 Shooter Thomas Basford 7b 142
Mary Shooter in the 1881 England Census Name: Mary Shooter Age: 24 Estimated birth year: abt 1857 Relationship to Head: Wife Spouse: Thomas Shooter Gender: Female Where born: Cotmanhay, Derbyshire, England Civil Parish: Ilkeston County/Island: Derbyshire Country: England Street address: 10 Mount Pleasant Cot Rd Marital Status: Married Education: Employment status: View image Registration district: Basford Sub registration district: Ilkeston ED, institution, or vessel: 9 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 3325 Folio: 93 Page Number: 46 Household Members: Name Age Thomas Shooter 25 Mary Shooter 24 Ruth Shooter 5 William Shooter 1 (not transcribed)
I don't see them in 1891, but here they are in 1901:
Thomas Shooter in the 1901 England Census Name: Thomas Shooter Age: 45 Estimated birth year: abt 1856 Relation to Head: Head Gender: Male Spouse: Mary Shooter Birth Place: Cotmanhay, Derbyshire, England Civil Parish: Ripley Ecclesiastical parish: Ripley All Saints Town: Ripley County/Island: Derbyshire Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Education: Employment status: View image Registration district: Belper Sub-registration district: Ripley ED, institution, or vessel: 4 Neighbors: View others on page Piece: 3229 Folio: 96 Page Number: 37 Household schedule number: 230 Household Members: Name Age Thomas Shooter 45 Mary Shooter 44 Elizabeth Shooter 18 Thomas Shooter 16 Arthur Shooter 14 Albert Shooter 11 Sarah Ann Shooter 9 John Shooter 5
But no Mary Elizabeth?
Have I got the wrong family again?

Hi, questions answered
1. Mary Elizabeth Platts is Mary L Platts. The name she used was Lizzie. She was born in 1899. The GRO is as follows:- PLATTS, MARY LIZZIE Mothers Maiden Name - SHOOTER GRO Reference: 1899 S Quarter in MANSFIELD Volume 07B Page 104
Maria Shooter should read Maria Fowkes. Maria did not have fathers name on birth certificate. Marias mother, Mary Fowkes, married a Thomas Shooter 1 year after Maria was born hence her using the name Shooter. There is no other mention of Mary's mother Maria until the 1901 Census.
2. I have no idea whether Mary stayed with Harry or not. This is where Mary has disappeared off the map.

Even though she left the children with their grandmother - did she stay with Harry, or did they separate?
Unfortunately, whether she remarried or not, there are so many possible marriages and deaths, not to mention emigration records.

Welcome to the boards, Lesley.
Unfortunately, it's 13 years since Tracey posted that query. She's unlikely to be looking for replies here now.
You can try sending her a private message -- click on her name at the top of her post.
If she has kept her email address updated with GR, they'll be able to notify her that she has a message from you in their system.
No guarantees that she'll reply, though, for any number of possible reasons.
Good luck!

Hi, My name is Lesley and its your lucky day. Mary Elizabeth Platts, known as Lizzle, is/was my grandma's sister, so therefore she's my great aunt. The Platts are a big family and I can fill in blanks for you for definite.
Mary had May in the Sheffield area and gave her to my granny (Maria Platts) to look after. She then married a Harry Coleman in 1922 at a Driffield Register Office and went back to Dinnington to have Harold on the 29 May 1922. He was then left with granny for her to bring up. How old he was when this happened I dont know. But he went on to marry and have 3 boys and lived in Rhodesia, Worksop. I have all documents to substantiate the above. I have also found Mays family. and once again I have all details of her life. :-D
I like you are having trouble finding Mary after she left Harold in Dinnington. I jope that you will be able to fill in my blans. Please get in touch and i can help you.
Yours Mrs Lesley Airey

Tracey Hennell.
Does anyone know of a Mary Elizabeth Platts who married a man called coleman?
not sure but last thought to be in the Birmingham area.
She had sisters living in the Dinnington area of south yorks.
She had a daughter and a son who were both left in the care of their grandmother. both of whom have passed away, we would love to fill in the blanks.
Mary was in service in the Talbot Street area of sheffield in about 1916/17.
