Just checked Ian. On the first page where you select birth certificate and you enter the year, there is a bit near the bottom asking
Is the GRO index reference number known
If you select yes for this, then click submit, the next page is where you fill in
Name, volume number and page number.

Hope this helps should you need to order any more certificates.

No problem Ian. I just wish we had told you before as we are all curious to know the details from Cyril's birth certificate.

I've just sent off another form with the GRO info. added as you suggested.. Frankly it was obvious once I looked again, ( silly me...) armed with your explanation.... I've asked them via e-mail to cancel my second application & just process the third one... but never mind if thats not possible - a lesson learnt for the next time.... . - the process seems to be much quicker if you include the GRO info... which makes sense as, i assume it would narrow the search somewhat. the estimated despatch date is now the 24th of Jan.... So we shall see.

I just had a reply to my note asking them to cancel the second order & just continue with my third attempt...
Their note said that once an order was placed it could not be cancelled, so after all of this I may end up with two of them :-D

Further, whilst i have been waiting for the certificate, I have been looking in to the Bakery history. It seems to me that as John & Edward Gunter both died in the same year 1922, it does seem quite likely that Florence may well have helped Amy or taken over the running of Edwards shop. But I haven't found anything that describes Edwards shop as a bakery?
However, I do have the two old pictures of the Bakers delivery vehicles. One old Van clearly says F.Thomas Baker & confectioner on the side, and its parked in front of Florence's bungalow on Gelli Ave. Risca.
But I have been puzzeling over the other vehicle, the presumably earlier horse & cart, which has a different name on its side panel ~ not Palmer, Gunter or Thomas?
( I have loaded both pictures in to Florence's details - If anyone wants to see - or I would be happy to send the higher resolution versions directly if anyone would like a better look?)
Anyway. I think I have resolved this one... there was a another baker, close by in St. Mary St. Risca, this was owned by Francis Sheddick. But according to the London Gazette, it went in to receivership in 1925, the year Florence (Gunter) married Edward Thomas.
Having found this, I'm pretty sure that the name on the cart is 'Sheddick' - SO.... either Florie started by helping Amy in Edwards shop after John & Edward died & then expanded by buying the Sheddick cart, & / or perhaps the remnants of the Sheddick business. Or possibly, she may have just bought / taken over the whole Sheddick bakery when it was closedown in 1925...
Florie, ran the 'F.Thomas', bakery with Cyril until the late 1930's when Cyril moved with Helena & their two boys to Bromsgrove.
Isn't all of this fun.... :-) I've now started putting lots of pictures onto my site, so there are lots of Florie & the others up there - ( and one which I'm pretty sure shows John & Cyril. ) please let me know if you want to give you access....
& of course I will put Cyrils birth Certificate up ASAP.

Husbands 4 x great grandfather was a hand loom weaver and poet and knew an acquaintance of Rabbie's very well. We have a copy of a drawing of our poet so I'll be raising a glass in memory our very own published poet :-) :-)
