The British Branch of the anglisised version of the surname Baylor has existed for hundreds of years. Most of the present day baylors residing in the United Kingdom are closely related and came accross from Ireland in the mid nineteenth century. So most baylors outside of the USA today have irish origins. It is believed that the name is originally Germanic in origin but that they moved around europe. In English Common Law,there is a phrase,"and the Bailey shall pay the Baylor".This would infer that a person was employed to raise revenues. The name also means a person who uses a measuring stick in their employment.Surnames that we know today, started in common official usage around the thirteenth century.A Man was usually named after his occupation or his locality.About 10% of European surnames have entitlement awarded for a Coat of Arms, there are at least two such for the Baylor Family in existance. The Burkes World Book of baylors is a good reference source. A Lady living in Florida, one Patricia Latford, who has her own website, has a wealth of knowledge on the family. One Ancestor was a personal Friend of George Washington and she has several volumes with personal histories including that Ancestors letters to Washington and his own responses to that Ancestor. The Garrison town of Fermoy near Cork City in Ireland has many Baylors who are Doctors and lawyers who run the Town.Others own industries or practice has lawyers in Cork. There appears to have been a rift between the family that embraces Religion and Social class Division. Lancashire and London now has the highest consentration of United Kingdom baylors. Sadly, One has discovered that the majority of baylors outside of my own Family of a sibling and first Cousins are in fact the Children of Children who were adopted by benevolent baylors now long since dead. One such was a Dr Baylor of Liverpool who adopted several Children. They should search elsewhere for their true Ancestors.
