We’ll just to further this a little… these guys seem to have evaded all the records, but …in agreement with the wedding proposed by Maddie in wolstanton, ..(and thanks for the lead) it seemed to make sense. But did they have a son George and not register him??

Well… freecen … going through every George born tunstall I find this…

1861 Mount street, Tunstall, Wolstanton.
William THORNE head. 29 mill furnace man b. Oldbury, Shropshire
Kitty THORNE wife 27 Potter b Tunstall
George THORNE son. 1. - b.. Tunstall

Not found after this, but I feel sure it’s the right George Thorneycroft.

You can see a digital image on the GRO site for a small cost. The last one I accessed cost £2.50, but I understand that may have increased slightly

Have you had sight of George junior's birth cert?

The address at which he was born MAY prove helpful, as one can search by address on FMP.

In 1881, they were not at the same address as in 1891

Yes sight of the wedding cert is best move. ??

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 14 Aug 2024 21:41

Perhaps he wasn’t named Thorneycroft at birth?

Was his father’s occupation recorded on the marriage cert?

Did the father witness the marriage?

Although this doesn’t solve the Ann problem, but could George have been on a night shift and therefore wouldn’t appear on a census.

Gillikins Report 14 Aug 2024 19:29

Of course his parents may not have registered him in 1860, but my thinking is, even if George is away somewhere in 1881, he married in burslem, and his son registered there in 1881, should not his wife Ann/ie not be found on census? Perhaps they were missed ??

ArgyllGran Report 14 Aug 2024 19:17

There were only two George Thorneycroft births registered in the right district in 1860 +/-2.

This is the child with parents Edward and Harriet:

THORNEYCROFT, GEORGE mmn CARTLIDGE
GRO Reference: 1860 D Quarter in WOLSTANTON Volume 06B Page 77

This one's parents were John and Margaret.

THORNEYCROFT, GEORGE mmn MALPASS
GRO Reference: 1862 S Quarter in WOLSTANTON Volume 06B Page 76

The only other one in all Staffordshire is this:

THORNEYCROFT, GEORGE mmn WOODEN
GRO Reference: 1860 J Quarter in DUDLEY Volume 06C Page 60

but his parents were Thomas and Mary Ann

Have you tried looking for a birth registration?

The GRO includes MMN pre-1911, unlike freebmd
