I wonder if he was working in the RN dockyard in Bermuda. OH’s cousins had no idea their father had worked there until we unearthed a photo and tracked him sailing to and from.

Jink posted a 1938 outward travel record, to Bermuda.
Here's his return to 21 Neville Place, Osmondthorpe, Leeds, in 1939:
Mr John Henry Hornby in the UK and Ireland, Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960 Name Mr John Henry Hornby Arrival Age 40 Birth Date abt 1899 Port of Departure West Coast of South America Arrival Date 3 Apr 1939 Port of Arrival Liverpool, England Ports of Voyage Liverpool; Valparaiso; Antofagasta; Arica; Iquique; Callao; Paita; Salinas; Cristbal; Kingston; Havana; Nassau; Bermuda and La Pallice Offi Ship Name Orbita Shipping Line The Pacific Steam Navigation Company Official Number 137467
His occupation is listed as Foreman Director. I expect that's a typo for Foreman Erector.

Right Thank you for all your help I've managed to find out Ronald was Evacuated in 1939 I couldn't find birth that fitted for Joseph so possibly he isn't the right family
Glady's I would have thought she would have been with Ronald ?? so without that marriage certificate I wouldn't know
So as it's a distant relation I think I've got what I needed
Thank you

If you look at the 1939 results, you will see that there are TWO. Look at BOTH
ALSO - when he went to Canada in 1940, he was NOT an engineer - he was Foreman Erector!!!
He was never in the Navy as far as can be seen

Why is ships rivetter to engineer too big a leap?
Added re the crossing out - he could have been recorded at a different address. Could he have a,ready signed up for the navy - if so he wouldn’t be registered at home.
