agingrocker, thankyou so much for having a look.

Oh my goodness, so that means its now just grass where people can walk over?

Crikey, that's very sad not just for me but for all peoples ancestors that were buried there.

Thankyou again for finding this info out, much appreciated

Florence, no luck with the headstone I'm afraid.

I did visit but couldn't find the grave in Section F.

Now I have done a little research, and found a photo of grave F 303, which I assume is 5 graves away from F 298. The photo is basically grass, with a comment saying that particular part of the cemetery had been cleared by the council in the 1980's, and the headstones were destroyed. So I'm afraid there is nothing to photograph.

Hannah's marriage in 1901:

Marriages Sep 1901 (>99%)
COVAIONDON Hannah Pain W. Ashford 2a 1730
Syrett Henry W. Ashford 2a 1730

Florence61 Report 22 May 2024 10:33

Ag, yes Clara was born reg as Covelands, they couldnt spell!
In 1901 the census has them in Ashford as lists Clara as 2 months old and says Grandaughter as Hannah was head. There is no father's name of the birth cert.

I do have the death cert somewhere and for some reason, it was registered as Clara Syrett. Sophia's surname is that of "her father" although her mother was not married(long story) Hannah although using the surname of Syrett didn't actually marry Mr Syrett until 1902! Her son Charles Arthur, his father's name was left blank on the birth cert but given Skinner as a 2nd christian name so that when she married he was then known as Charles Arthur Skinner.

The whole of my grandfathers beginning and his parents are all so complicated but now with the deaths I have found, i can now leave this tree in peace or at least these branches of it.

Thanks again for everyones help.

I downloaded the deaths cert this morning and here are the results:

Patrick Haggarty d 1954
Cause of death: Senility, Gastric Ulcer and Coronary something I cant read.

He was living at 4 Mill Street Milton Regis, Sittingbourne.

Informant was Sophia's daughter from her 1st married May Miriam Breaker nee Skinner.
Listed as step daughter.
His occupation given as Royal navy.

So this quest to find his death has finally been solved!

AG yes in the beginning, I was taken down the wrong route not by anyone on here but by myself given there were 2 Haggertys with similar names.

Now Sophias 1st husband: Charles Edward Skinner
b 1869
d 1926

Aged 57
Add he was living at was 42 Magpie Hall Rd, Chatham.

Death informed by the occupant James Spinks( badly written)

Died from Chronic Bronchitus.

So maybe they were separated/divorced after all when he died?

Just for info:
in 1921 Sophia's sister who was May Miriam Syrett married a Bert Evans. The witnesses were Sophia Skinner and her son Charles Arthur Skinner. So its possible she was separated then as one would have thought her husband would have been the other witness not her son?

Anyway, no matter, Thankyou for all you assistance. I can now do some corrections and get this part of the tree finally sorted.

As for Sophia's death and where she is buried, I need to relook that up.

Oh actually, I did post that earlier, she died in a hospital in Milton Regis but don't know where she is buried..

Agingrocker I have the grave ref:
Section F
Grave 298 (C)

Re the grave details though, it gives his names as
Edward Charles Skinner but the death was registered as Charles e Skinner!

Hope this helps and if you were able to go and find the gravestone, that would be so amazing thankyou for your kind offer.

I assumed - perhaps erroneously - that Clara was Sophia’s daughter as they were together on 1901 census, but, as the child died in infancy I guess it isn’t a major issue

Thank you Argyllgran, but they are the same cemetery. Maidstone Road is the main entrance, Palmerston Road is the alternative entrance, plus the cemetery has another large chunk opposite on the other side of Palmerston Road

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 22 May 2024 09:27

As Alfred/Patrick is not the man born in Gibraltar, of course that means that William Haggerty and his wife Clara Appleton , researched at the start of your thread, aren't part of your tree either.
I assume lots of deletions/corrections to keep you busy, Florence!

Re Clara 1901 -
I'm confused. ErikaH called her Sophia's daughter, but your reply seems to imply she was the child of Sophia's sister Hannah.
Hannah married in the months between Clara's birth and death, which would account for the different surnames.
Do you have the birth or death certs?

Re graves -
Edward Charles Skinner was buried in Chatham Maidstone Road Cemetery - not Palmerston Road.

I don't see anything online to indicate where Sophia was buried.

Florence, I am only a few miles from Palmerston Cemetery, I can have a look there for you and take a photo of the headstones - assuming I can find them of course. The cemetery is huge, in 2 parts as well, I have found a location for Edward Charles Skinner (F,298) but I have no idea where that is.

What makes you say Sophia is also buried there, I can't find a record of a grave for her. I can look for her as well, but really need a location or we are talking needles and haystacks. Maybe it's yet another mis-spelling - do you know how her surname is spelt on the headstone?

I don't think I'll get there this week, but hopefully next week.

For some reason, when she died later in 1901, she was registered as Clara Syrett which was her mothers married name Hannah Syrett ???

Florence61

Florence61 Report 21 May 2024 19:21

Clara was born in Jan 1901 and died a few months later.

This is a very good website for workhouses/unions. It also includes date lists of what records are available at Medway

What happened to Sophia’s daughter Clara?

Florence61

Florence61 Report 21 May 2024 17:15

No, in 1881 he was living at home with his parents Catherine Skinner b 1835 and his father Stephen John Skinner b 1826. They were a big family and not seeing a sister called jane.

They stayed at new Street West Ashford.

Charles was born in Middlesex according to that census and yob was 1866.

I spent hours over the years doing the family tree and never found Sophia and Charles in 1911. . I think they moved about a lot and were in and out of the work houses.

I shall order the death certs and get back to you all

Thanks again

In 1921, ‘A’ Charles E Skinner was sharing a home with his sister, Jane, and saying he was SINGLE

Same in 1911.

Do you have 1911 census for Sophia?

I don’t know if you do this but when I find someone on Find a Grave I usually look at the other people with that surname buried in the same cemetery ( an option towards the right). Sometimes helps to fill in a few dates.

There's no image of Charles Skinner's gravestone on Findagrave.

On the Findagrave entry there's a link to "Request a photo".
I don't know if anyone responds to such requests or not, but it's worth a try!

As far as I'm aware, a digital image will show all the usual info about the death, but just not things such as page headings, reg district, etc.
