1891 Wales census
Parish: Gelligaer
Town: Brithdir
RG12/4431

Living at 8, Colliers Row is Charles Jenkins, age 44, born in Mamhilad, Monmouthshire. He's with his wife, Mary and six children, a nephew and a grandson.
There is writing next to Charles under the occupation column and I can't make it out at all, apart from two words possibly being "stated" and "name".

Can someone please take a peek for me?

Thanks, ErikaH, that's the family. It's definitely Colliers Row. We know the area. The street is still there, although the houses have been rebuilt and some have disappeared.

For picky total accuracy, it's "Stationary engine driver" on image.
There's also another word after that - possibly "under". Presumably short for "underground".

The enumerator thought it was Collins Row - or maybe couldn't read his own handwriting when transferring the info from his notes to the final form.

A rose by any other name……….. ;-) ;-)

But you are 100% correct AG..................viewing now on desktop as opposed to iPad and image is really clear.

Just by way of interest - if anyone is interested - just about every town in the South Wales Valleys had a Colliers Row, built to house the workers in the pits as they sprung up. As the pits grew - as did the numbers of workers - another row of houses was built. They then called the original houses Old Colliers Row and the new ones New Colliers Row. Just thought I'd throw that in the mix, not that it has any relevance to Charles and his mysterious occupation.

You obviously 'know' that it is supposed to be Collier's Row, but using the address search facility on FMP doesn't produce the record to which you referred. ;-) ;-)

And the transcriber on FMP had no problems deciphering the occupation

Thanks, all, for your efforts. Charles was obviously a colliery worker to have been occupying one of those houses, it's the other words I wondered about.
