Hello Again, I have sent for the Birth certificate for Stanley and that is due next week, On the Marriage Cert dated the 08/06/1917 for Grace and Richard she indicates that her Father was a Charles Thomas McGee an Engineer and she was a "Munition worker" this was of course the middle of the 1914/18 war and that Richard was a "Cats Meat Dealer" as was his Father George William i do know that Richard (My Grandfather) was still selling this meat during the WW2.' It is my intention to apply for the Marriage Cert for Stanley and Dorothy which you have kindly supplied the References for .the next step is to try and establish the names of the Children , any ideas on that would be appreciated.

Use freebmd to find births between their marriage and leaving the UK. Bear in mind that births during WW11 may Nat have taken place or registered in the areas you would expect.

Transcription is slightly garbled in places. I haven't seen the original.
YOUNG WIFE'S HUSBANDS
Bigamy Charge at Malmesbury. I married Bridger, lived with him, and [had a ] child by him that is now six years old, was the admission made by young London woman to her second husband, when the latter accused her of being Mrs Bridger. [In] the dock at Malmesbury Police Court yesterday stood Grace Bridger (aged 24). who surrendered to her bail on a charge of bigamy by going through the marriage ceremony with William Edward Stock, Minety Parish Church on 1st July, 1924 , her lawful husband Richard Bridger, of 72, Nelson Road, Twickenham, whom she married June, 1917, at the Registry Office, Gunnersbury. being then alive v.105., the time when he met the Brmkworth [?], whilst [in his] parents' home at Woburn Farm, Minety, Wilts that early in this year he . . . . . attended dances at the Swimming Baths, Swindon, and he there met accused. He knew her [as] Grace McGhee (her maiden name). and she was a single woman, but did not tell him her age. They kept company until July 1st, when they were married [at] Minety Parish Church. While returning from visit to the police he met accused, and she said to him, What is the matter ? He replied, I believe you are Mrs Bridger. Accused denied this, and asked him to go with her to his home and she would explain matters, saying that she thought some mistake had been made. He did not accompany her, but left her and went to live at Minety. Accused went away, but returned and he then told her he could not help her. It was [a] very wet and rough night and as accused had nowhere to go, his parents accommodated her in their home where she stayed until she was arrested. Formally charged with the offence, accused, who had asked no questions, replied, I would rather wait and say what I have to say at the Assize. . She was committed for trial Devizes January next. Bail was allowed—accused in her own recognisances in the sum £40, and one surety for the same amount.

BIGAMY AT MINETY. Bridger (24) pleaded guilty to bigamy, marrying William Edward Stock at Minety on July 1st last during the life of her former husband . Mr. Thomas, prosecuting, said the prisoner told Stock she was a single woman, and it was not until October November that [he] discovered she had been previously married. A witness from Catford, London, brother-in-law, giving evidence on the prisoner behalf, said she was subjected to persistent cruelty [by] her first husband, against whom she had a separation and maintenance order. Asked if she had anything to say, prisoner said her first husband was very cruel, and ran away from her. The Judge will consider that [in] your favour, that your first husband was “bad lot,” but that does not excuse you for pretending to be single and deceiving another man. This bigamy is a serious matter, but in your case four months’ imprisonment will [be] sufficient . . . .

If the court reporter in 1925 was correct, she chopped a few years off her age, saying she was 24 , instead of 28.
She also added a middle name when she married William Stock.

I don't think the 1939 record for Horace, posted by Kay????, is the correct one. (In fact, that man's name is Carter, not Cater - mistranscribed.)
I think this will be him, in Lewisham - with a different partner. I don't see a marriage:
Horace W Cater in the 1939 England and Wales Register Name Horace W Cater Gender Male Marital Status Married Birth Date 7 Sep 1900 Residence Date 1939 Address 184 Residence Place Lewisham, London, England Occupation Shell Examiner Line Number 17 Schedule Number 105 Sub Schedule Number 1 Enumeration District Aojr Borough Lewisham Registration district 2/27 Inferred Spouse Nellie A Cater Household Members (Name) Gender Horace W Cater Male Nellie A Cater Female - 23 Jan 1910

Looks like Grace had moved on again, some time between 1930 and 1939.

Hi Petmar,
I think skeletons are good because they sometimes help us understand why things were as they were regardless,,,,,,,perhaps it was never told grandad spent a few months hard labour or like yours granmother comitted bigamy, :-D :-,,,,,now days its no big deal,,,but back then it was best swept under the carpet and not spoken of again......
I wonder why or what made Stanley and his family come to UK in 1960,,,as there didnt seem to many family members around.
