He and Joan married in Hove in 1944, so he had certainly been in England during the war, then gone back to Canada, and returned in 1946 - per records posted above. |

....Sunday on November 14 it is worth thinking about them For men like Ken White Remembrance Sunday will be a day of special memories But he was one of the lucky ones he returned ........ came vividly to life again when Ken went back to his section of “Gold” beach one of the invasion points Ken who lives at Latham Avenue Frimley was one of a party of veterans taking part in an inaugural tour of the Normandy beaches and war graves with Summerfield Coaches of Southampton Although he had been on many of the battlefield tours organised by the Staff College Camberley Ken had never returned to his old landing beach at Courseulles so Summer-field’s boss Alan Rowe made a short detour and Ken was back in his own personal history He stepped on to the sand dunes of the beach once more and relived those war-time memories Ken was 28 years old at the time of the landings and was in charge of a platoon of 13 Bren gun carriers put ashore as part of 7 Bn The Hampshire Regt on D-Day-plus-seven They were part of 1 30 Infantry Brigade and the 62 men under Ken had sailed from Tilbury aboard an old American ship and disembarked on a flat-bottomed landing craft “It was a fairly clear day but it had been raining heavily” he said pointing to the beach front now a holiday area “We moved forward and joined up with the rest of the battalion just south of Bayeux The German Air Force was still attacking us but I was more concerned with the dead bodies in the sea “You had a curious feeling of elation despite the death because you were doing the job you were trained to do although there was still fear” Imminent Ken had been working as a junior assistant at Bournemouth public library but when war looked imminent early in 1939 he volunteered for the Coldstream Guards Later he transferred to the Hampshire Regt and was commissioned After the Normandy landings he fought with the regiment through France and after the war went with it to Palestine He left the Army in 1947 and qualified as a librarian before joining the Staff College in 1967 He retired last year but is still honorary museum curator at the college But as he stood on that beach at Courseulles his mind was back in 1944 “We didn’t know where we were going until we landed but we had been given a picture and as we came ashore we tried to match it up to the reality of the beach All the landmarks were there “Now coming back again is pure nostalgia It all comes back the picture is still the same as it was” By his side as he remembered was former Canadian Army sergeant >>>___Percy Towgood___ <<<now an official at the Canadian Embassy in London He had landed just little further along the same Normandy coast at Arromanches where the remains of the wartime Mulberry harbours are still to be seen They were two of the lucky survivors of the landings Ken lost about a third of his 62-strong platoon and as we toured the area he pointed out places where they had fought and fallen At Bretteville he remembered coming under heavy fire as they moved forward just behind the front line “It was not very pleasant knowing that someone wanted to kill you” - the Allied landings in June 1944 A German but the beaches are now holiday resorts Ken White had a mental picture of where he landed as a young Army officer the Second World War to a young French boy by a British soldier earlier on in the war but the boy knew that if the Germans found it he would be punished So he hid it beneath the bark of a tree This summer he returned to the tree and climbed to the top to find the badge still hidden where he had left it only much higher as the tree has grown in the 40 years since Further along the tour there were other .... |
