I am trying to get definitive proof of my 3x grandfather Thomas Crouch.
He was either christened on 16/12/1733 at Lavendon with father Christopher and mother Elizabeth
or on 21/12/1735 at Emberton with father Thomas and mother Mary. TIA Mike

When did he die? How old was he?

Where did Thomas live? It is worth looking at the naming patterns of both Thomas’s children and grandchildren, sometimes that helps things fall into place.

Have you looked to see if any of the potential fathers left wills?

So quite possible that the author of that tree wasn’t aware of the two Thomas Crouch’s born within a couple of years.

I saw that tree, but they've mixed up the two Thomases - showing the 1733 baptism in Lavendon, but saying his parents were Thomas and Mary, when the baptism record clearly shows Christopher and Elizabeth.

Thomas Crouch
in the England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name: Thomas Crouch
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 16 Dec 1733
Baptism Place: Lavendon,Buckingham,England
Father: Cristefer Crouch
Mother: Elizabeth
FHL Film Number: 1042387

There's no image of the 1758 marriage record on Ancestry - but it probably wouldn't have named his father in any case:

Thos. Crouch
in the England, Select Marriages, 1538-1973
Name: Thos. Crouch
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 24 Dec 1758
Marriage Place: Emberton, Buckingham, England
Spouse: Johanna Joyce

On Findagrave, there are a few Crouches in Emberton Churchyard, but no photos of their stones - and none of them is Thomas.

None of them are in that tree.

The eldest of those Crouches is William, born c1771 per 1841 census, when he's in Emberton with wife Charlotte.
Buried 9 March 1849.

Can't find his baptism or marriage.

Thanks everyone.
I agree the detail in post 12:57.
Thomas & Johanna had the children in post 12:44
I have a burial of Thomas 04/04/1806 in Emberton, no age, post 12:28.
So, unless I 've missed something, still a mystery?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 18 Feb 2023 16:18

Yes, still a mystery.

Such old records don't give much detail.
When there's more than one family of the same surname in a village, and a limited range of first names used, it's often impossible to be sure which family a child belongs to.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 18 Feb 2023 16:43

How have you proved that the 1806 burial is your ancestor?

When/where was his wife buried?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 18 Feb 2023 16:59

It seems feasible that the Thomas in the tree mentioned by Maddie at 12:44 was the son of Christopher and Elizabeth, because his eldest son was named Christopher.

But that's only a guess and I can't prove it!

David

David Report 19 Feb 2023 10:15

Sorry ErikaH, missed your question at 16:43.
I've no proof of either burials, just 'possibles that fit' from Ancestry:
Thomas 04/04/1806 Emberton and Hanna 11/05/1804 Emberton

Ooops! From FMP (Buckinghamshire burials) not Ancestry

It is always work looking at the Genuki pages to see what is available and where you might find it. Although it might mean you have to buy cds etc.

I had not come across the term Posse Comitatus before - possibly worth looking in to.
