Thanks Shirley,
Yes, reading back it makes sense. I think I jumped too early and replied at 18.25 before I digested the information properly. That makes more sense, now that I have a few more names, I can go through the census and find our more.
When you get a piece of paper, and write it as a tree, it makes more sense.
So the Steer children, were born after Frdk. so they are half-siblings, rather than step-siblings.

Motown girl
His mum appears to have been Eliza. But with no birth registration it’s just speculation
His grandparents though are John Hallam and Martha nee Hopewell
His baptism was posted by Maddie
Here it is again

Reading back the post from Maddie. Could it be that Elizabeth was Frdk's mother, and died in childbirth, and brought up by Martha?
I know this is speculation, but I just cannot make sense of it.

Thank you both Shirley and Maddie.
You can maybe see my confusion. Could Martha be a diminative of Elizabeth? I have not heard of that before. I guessed Hopewell was MMN.
In the 1891 Census in Islington, in his household are two males named Steer, who are apparently step-brothers, I am trying to get the connection. Sometimes they are half siblings, but not recorded as such.
Back to another digging session. Thanks again.

Can someone please do me a kindness and do a Census look up for Frederick Hopewell Hallam. Born 1866c. in Kegworth, Leicestershire.
From his marriage certificate, Islington Parish Church, 3rd June 1888, to Annie Dolby, daughter of Wm. Dolby, Blacksmith, Islington. His father is Samuel Hallam. The witnesses are Wm. Dolby (possibly brother rather than father), and Susan Dolby, sister
Frederick is obviously living in London at the time of the wedding, but I cannot find a previous census.
I have 1891 and 1901. He goes from a bus conductor to a fish fryer.
Thank you in advance.
