Hello All

I am at a loss with this one who is my Great Uncle.

Leonard was born 14th April 1908, Shoreditch to Edward Wood and Harriet Wood (Hills).

I have his birth record, 1911 Census, 1939 Census, School Admissions and his Death Certificate.

1939 Census indicates he was a bus driver living in Twickenham and was married: not spouse appears to be living with him but there is a blacked out line. He is with Trout/Bury family.

His death cert of 1996 indicates he is a retired bus driver living, DOB matches and living just down the road in Richmond Upon Thames. The informant was his widow Florence Wood.

I cannot find him in the 1921 census either.

I am unable to find any marriage prior to 1939 which may match him and any for a Florence prior to his death.

Any fresh eyes would be great thanks.

Can you post the 1939 Register record for him as I can't find it?

Beatrice Bury is Thomas and Lily's daughter who married in 1921.
The closed entry might be her husband Alfred.

Leonard's middle initial is clearly C on the image - but presumably the enumerator's mistake , assuming this is the right man.

There are 4 possible deaths for Florence between 1998 and 2005. All within the Surrey areas.
You may need to splash out on those and see if you can find the right one.

Living in Twickenham he was probably based out of the Fulwell Garage.

Added: It might be be worth having a look at what the London Transport Museum has in the way of staff records. They may have staff addresses which might help you do some tracking down.

The schedular for LTB must have had a nightmare as there is also a Leonard J Wood ( wife Edith) living in Merton and a bus driver on the 1939 index.

Oh the headaches he must have had.

1931 ER shows Leonard Charles & Florence Wood were living at 5 Parkside Road, Twickenham.

There are far more records for Leonard C (or Charles) than there are for Leonard George or G.

The only records with middle initial G are ER 1963-4, and the birth cert which Delboy has.

Leonard Charles (aka Leonard George) seems to be Edward Robert's brother:

In 1901 they lived at 25 Fellows Street....must of upgraded!

Edward R Wood was his brother yes and he and Maud had two children: Coincidently: called Edward and Maud!

Their marriage Banns states 32 Fellows Street as well.

So, it looks like possible Leonard went by two middle names! The marriage with Florence Knott looks possible, so I am going to purchase that one to rule it out or in...

That address is on Leonard's death certificate! Too much of a coincidence!!

Good that you have got some addresses that match with known family homes.

The middle name is confusing. An initial can be written badly but you wouldn’t use another name when filling out official documents.

As yet we haven’t found either of the names at the same address.

1921 shows Grace, Edward, Harris(sic) and one other living together

Marriage Certificate purchased: am hoping this helps to see if this is the right chap!

I am struggling to find Florence Wood's death or her in the 1939 register.

I have found her mum and dad living alone. Her sister Violet was an in-patient at a long stay hospital for people with Learning Disabilities. Agnes the other sister was somewhere else.

Unable to locate Florence (she was also Florrie) and Lorna Knott in 1939 too!

No, I haven't been able to find them in 1939 either.

They're not at 61 Popes Avenue in 1939, and there's nobody listed at 15 Villiers Avenue.

Perhaps they weren't in England or Wales during the war???

Can't see Florence's death either .

You mention a sister Agnes. I don't see such a birth.

There was a sister Annie Elizabeth, born 1906. She married Harry Hill [ born Horace Henry ] in 1923, and they had two children, both of whom (presumably) are the closed records with their parents in Hackney in 1939.
