As a point of interest, my current home has only a name - not a number. And I live in a fair-sized town

I think I have just found the reason for most of this mystery. Susannah Mary Thompson did not ever shorten her name to Mary. Hence the confusion! Susannah married Joseph Heath in Marlow on 12 Nov 1823, after he was previously married to an Emma Elizabeth Mason in 1803, who died 10 years later. Joseph seems to have died in 1837.
Susannah seemed to have lived all her married life, even widowed, in Bisham, Berkshire, just over the river from Marlow. Her burial date 23 Dec 1872. In "All Saints" church, presumably Marlow.
This still leaves the mystery of a Meads in Bovingdon's Green.

Thank you all once again and confirming my notes, which appeared muddled, apologies for that. As this frustrating search has taken so much time without a definite result, it will have to be put aside for now.
Thank you all very much again, it is very fortunate that we have you "helpers" to do further research.

Elizabeth Meads did die in 1839, as Terence says - so she definitely wasn't the mother of Sarah 1852!
Elizabeth Meads in the Oxfordshire, England, Church of England Deaths and Burials, 1813-1965 Name: Elizabeth Meads Age: 33 Birth Year: abt 1806 Burial Date: 6 May 1839 Burial Place: Henley on Thames, St Mary, Oxfordshire, England Parish as it Appears: Henley Upon Thames

I agree, Names. Years of birth stated on censuses are also not always accurate, which doesn't help, but I do think Terence is getting muddled.
In any case, the Henley marriage Terence mentions seems to have been in 1832 - not 1803:
Elizabeth Clark in the Oxfordshire, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930 Name: Elizabeth Clark [spinster] Gender: Female Marriage or Bann Date: 11 Nov 1832 Marriage Place: Henley on Thames, St Mary, Oxfordshire, England Spouse: James Meades [bachelor]
EDIT: OH, I see - I misread Terence's post. He meant that James Meads was born in 1803, not that the marriage was in 1803:
James Mades in the Oxfordshire, England, Church of England Baptism, Marriages, and Burials, 1538-1812 Name: James Mades Event Type: Baptism Birth Date: 21 Feb 1803 Baptism Date: 20 Mar 1803 Baptism Place: Henley on Thames, St Mary, Oxfordshire, England Father: James Mades Mother: Mary Mades

With all the reasearch Terence has done with many Meads he cannot place I wonder if he is muddling some of them up. I know I have done that when thinking about family names sometimes.

Speaking of things not being clear, Terence -
"There is a Sarah Meads1852 in my tree, possibly born to an Elizabeth Clark who married my James Meads1803 later in Henley. It looks like she had all her children before marriage. But records show she died in 1839."
Who died in 1839? Clearly not Sarah 1852, nor her mother.

Terence With regard to house numbering we were looking at a small place with few houses. Streets with plenty of houses, such as towns and large villages will have numbering. Even so, one can’t always rely on the fact that a house keeps the same number over the years as streets are sometimes re numbered.

Thank you all for your prompt replies. I did not realize houses back then were not numbered. So residents knew each other very closely and may have referred to the older Mary Heath as an Aunt as I have done in the past. As has been stated in the past, enumerators were not that well educated and sometimes mis-spelt and misplaced information. In the 1871 census it is definitely an M in Meads with the S, (Not Head). As on the same page above, there is my Joseph's family, and that script is the same as Geo Meads below. With my William's family being there also in the late 1800's, they may have had a visit from the George Meads1822 mentioned in my post above, but he seems to have died late 1871. So not the one in the 1881 census showing Mary Heath. There is a Sarah Meads1852 in my tree, possibly born to an Elizabeth Clark who married my James Meads1803 later in Henley. It looks like she had all her children before marriage. But records show she died in 1839. James then married an Elizabeth Hester in 1844. So.....it seems things are still not very clear! Again thank you all very much for your replies. Terence.

Terence isn't looking for house numbers now. He's wondering how or if George Meads fits into his tree.
However, I don't see any records to prove his relationship to Mary Heath, let alone anyone else.
EDIT:
Given the niece Sarah Clark with George and Mary in 1871, posted earlier, I wonder if this is George in 1861:
George Meads in the 1861 England Census Name: George Meads Age: 38 Estimated Birth Year: 1823 Relation: Head Mother's Name: Elizabeth Clark Gender: Male Where born: Marton, Buckinghamshire, England [Marlow, Bucks] Civil parish: St Martin Ludgate Ecclesiastical parish: London County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Registration district: London City Sub-registration district: London City North West ED, institution, or vessel: 2 Neighbors: Household schedule number: 152 Piece: 222 Folio: 38 Page number: 35 Household Members Age Relationship George Meads 38 Head, widower, carman Elizabeth Clark 58 Mother , widow - Lambeth

A little research goes a long way.
In 1833 there were only 6 households - no need for numbers!

Houses in villages and hamlets didn’t have house numbers
Not many had street names either
It’s still the same now !
My friend lives in a hamlet in Wiltshire and her house just has a name and it’s in a unnamed land with 5 other name only houses

For info: Terence has a number of threads on this family.
Terence, what makes you think there were house numbers? I used to live in a small village and houses were often known by the name of the occupier rather than the house name or number. Only the postman knew them by those.
Bovingdon Green is still referred to as a hamlet and currently only has a popullation of 32.000

Initially trying to find ancestor's house numbers in Bovingdon's Green, Marlow, Buckinghamshire, I've come across a George Meads1823. He is listed as nephew to "aunt' Mary Heath late 1790's (MN Thompson) in the 1871 and 1881 census'. The George Meads, born late1822 I do have, married Emma Sayer and died in late 1871, leaving 3 Daughters. With other ancestors living at Bovingdon;s Green at the same time, I cannot place this other George Meads1823! I have Joseph Meads1820 there in the 1871 & 1881 census'.. Also William Meads1827 also there in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census'.
I cannot place Mary Heath or George1823 in my 'tree'. She (first name Susanna?) originates from Middlesex and seems to have married a Joseph Heath1799 in Marlow on 12/11/1823. Then widowed before 1861 and being in Bisham, Cookham, Berkshire, then as a "Fund Holder", previously a School Mistress. In Marlow, listed as an "Annuitant" .
Lastly, I can't find it now, but I think I found a George benefiting from probate of a woman called ? ? Peach. A miss spelling of Heath?!?
I appreciate this is a big request, but can anyone help with all this please.
Terence Meads. South Australia.
