Find Ancestors

Hi, I am looking for a little help tracing my great grandfather's ancestry as I have just re joined GR after about 14yrs and I really am a novice as well as not being very technology savvy :-(
I still have my father who is 82 and has always wanted to know more about his grandfather on his mother's side. Boaty Bill (apparently he had been a champion rower in his day) as he was known, William Elliott born 1850/51. I'm afraid there was some bad feeling towards him on my great grandmother's part and she wouldn't discuss him and my grandmother was only 4 when he died so she had no real memories of him to speak of. The only factual evidence we have of him is their wedding certificate and birth certificate of my grandmother, Margaret Elliott, 10th April, 1913.
We know that they lived in The Huts, Little Houghton, district of Hemsworth, West Yorkshire, England. This is confirmed on both certificates.

William Elliott age 62, Widower, coal miner (contracter) The Huts, Little Houghton, Father: John Elliott (deceased) farmer.
Married:
Margaret Ellen Adams age 32, Spinster, The Huts, Little Houghton. Father William Adams. Employed as pottery worker.

We also know my great grandmother was from Bolton Upon Dearne. We have her birth certificate Born 24th January 1881, Father William Adams. Occupation, Potter. Mother, Mary Bennett Adams (formerly Duke) Born in the sub district of Barnbrough, &Registration district Doncaster, County York. Registered on 3rs February 1881.

They had 2 children together Margaret Elliott B.1913 and Constance Mary Elliott B.1914 Little Houghton.

Anyway back to William. I do believe I have found him on the 1911 census in Little Houghton; William Elliott age 60, widower, coal miner, Born Northumberland. Living with Mary Anne Scholey age 45, single, housekeeper.

Also the 1901 census living at Middlecliffe lane, Little Houghton.

Eva Nell age 11, granddaughter. Born Little Houghton.

1891 census living at Village, Little Houghton.
William Elliott age 40, married, Coal miner. Born Northumberland
Margaret Elliott age 41, 1850. Married. Born Northumberland (Warden)
John Elliott age 16, 1875. Son. Colliery Labour. Born Pegswood, Northumberland
Eva Nell Elliott age 1, 1890. Granddaughter. Born Houghton
Elizabeth Ann age 21, 1870. Daughter. Dressmaker Born Newham, Northumberland

I believe that I have them on the 1881 census at 60 Pilgrim St, Fox & Lamb Inn. To include Isabella, Daughter Born 1873 in Ashington Northumberland.

This is where I get stuck. I think I have them on the 1871 census at Grange cottage, Longhirst, Morpeth, Northumberland but with only the one child, Elizabeth Ann age Born 1870. But with Williams sister Mary Ann Elliott born 1853 Northumberland and Brother Thomas Elliott born 1839 Berwick Scotland.

I have found bits on the 1861census with William lodging with his brother Thomas and 1851 census William living with grandparents possibly? but not sure at all??

I can't seem to make any real connections for William or his siblings to his parents. I know his father was John a farmer.

I know this really is a mammoth task but just wondered if any could help me at all please ??

1881 to which you refer has William as a retired publican.

All other info you give has him as a coal miner, which is a radical change of occupation, although not impossible, of course

So if your grandmother was about 4 when he died have you looked around the age for a possible death

1871 at Grange Cottage, William is again a coal miner

Have you looked for/found his first marriage?

I wonder if William is on the 1861 twice - once with parents as in 1861 posted by ErikaH, and again as a boarder in Newcastle.

However, the names are very common.
