What amazing finds AG! I really wish I could find articles like this about members of my family, really breathes life into the names. Poor, poor Bella but what a supportive husband she had.

Looking at the Joseph Mullens in London in 1921, posted by Kay????, and digging around a bit more (1921, ERs, marriages, etc) , I worked out that in 1921 he was in the household of Sir Norman Moore (1847 Broughton, Lancs) and Lady Milicent Bella Moore (1868 Guestling, Sussex). Rose Cole (1865 Ireland) was also in the household, probably a servant, and one other person whom I haven't identified so far - possibly another servant. (In 1911 they had a housemaid and a chauffeur.)
In 1919 and 1920 the Moores were living at 67 Gloucester Place, St Marylebone, with Norman's son from his first marriage (who also became a physician, and a baronet) , so that may be where Joseph Mullens was in 1921.
(Of course we don't know if that man is Joseph James or not.)
Then I fell down a genealogy wormhole - as you do - off at a tangent:
This is nothing to do with Kelzi's search for Joseph James - but interesting (at least I think so!).
Their main home was in Whatlington, Sussex. Sir Norman (a physician, MD FRCP) died in Sussex in 1922, and Milicent in 1947 in Hastings..
This interesting piece is about Milicent Bella's mother:
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2007/nov/24/familyandrelationships.family1
and this about Norman and Milicent:
https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2010/jun/26/charlotte-moore-hancox-sussex
There's other online stuff about other members of the family. For instance, Norman's son (Sir) Alan Hilary Moore, with whom they're listed in 1919 and 1920 ERs.

The 1911 you refer to in which his age and therefore birth year equate to the 1901 census already posted. The writing on the original is a bit of a scrawl and the I of Mullin could just as easily be an E. Single is written several times by various names and the E at the end of the word looks like a I in places.

Will remove the actual census transcript as alviegal beat me to it.

Could possibly be him. In the 1901 census he is also said to have been born in 1892.

He didn't die in Scotland.
There are a few possibilities in Ireland, but without middle name or initial - and only feasible if he somehow avoided appearing in the 1911 census.
Unfortunately, Joseph Mullen is a very common name.

I am hitting a brick wall with this one can anyone help? Joseph James Mullen was born in 1890 in Barrow-in-Furness, I have him in the 1891 census and then the 1901 census but he seems to just disappear after that ? I can find no record of his death or any marriage. I have also had a look for any military records for him but again nothing was found.
