I'm looking for Francis Truscott on the 1881 census and can't find any trace. His dates are 1841-1920 and he's on every census between those dates except 1881. He's living in Marazion with his wife Mary Ann b 1841 and 5 children, Francis Joseph, Mary Elizabeth, Saint, Alfred Waymouth, and Winifred. Can anyone find this reference please?

That's interesting because all the family are with their grandparents except Francis Joseph who is apprenticed. Francis not around at all. Thank you

He's shown as a Builder on the 1871 census and Joiner/Carpenter in 1891 - maybe he was working away from home and just didn't get recorded.

The child you show as named Saint appears on the 1871 census as Sebeina and that is what her birth registration shows too.

Yes I wondered if he was travelling because he's described as a Journeyman, so travelling to sell his work.
Thank you everyone

He may well have been working away from home, but not because he was a journeyman.

"Journeyman" has nothing to do with travelling or journeys.
It's a level of competence in a building trade - someone who had completed an apprenticeship, but wasn't yet a master craftsman.

Francis never became a master craftsman, judging by the census entries - he's still listed as a journeyman carpenter in 1901, and then retired by 1911, so he must have been a journeyman for most of his working life.

The term "journeyman" was originally used in the medieval trade guilds. Journeymen were paid daily and the word "journey" is derived from journée, meaning "day" in French. ... A journeyman, as a qualified tradesman could become a master and run their own business, but most continued working as employees.
