Many thanks for your fabulous replies, I really appreciate it.
I had a friend staying for Christmas and have only had a chance to look at my genealogy project today.
I will be doing some further research.
It was only a guess as to James' age, but if he was born in England, it would explain why I could not find anything in Ireland.

Re the 1869 marriage -
Harriet E is John Robert Catterson's wife in 1871 census.

Can't see any of the people named on 1901 Irish Census. When did they emigrate to SA?

The title of Beryl's thread says that James was born in 1862.

If that's correct, the 1869 marriage isn't his.

Have you found a record of James and Anne's marriage, Beryl?
If not, how do you know when James was born? Or is 1862 only a guess?

So James and Ann are more likely to have been English rather than Irish.

Beryl definetly needs to get that marriage certiifcate.

Is that your entry on Wikitree (as Beryl Smith) - joined 7 Dec 2021 - states you don't know who Kate's (your GT Grandma) parents were?

Might there be family records - there is an Estate Shoot still held - probably where James was Gamekeeper?

Coordinates: 54.2667°N 6.3833°W Drumbanagher House (also known as Drumbanagher Castle and Closes Castle), near Poyntzpass, County Armagh, was a large country house in Northern Ireland designed for Maxwell Close by William Notman, working under William Playfair[1] in 1829, being "one of his grandest country houses."[2][3]

Following occupation by the American and British armies during World War Two, Drumbanagher was demolished by its owner in 1951 due to the expense in up keeping the property; the estate remains in the possession of the Close family. Writing in the Belfast Telegraph in 1962 the then owner said;

"No mortal could have afforded to keep the castle going. So I had it demolished. Death duties, upkeep and financial difficulties meant I just had to get rid of it...It was perfectly sound and in good order when it was demolished...Now it looks like a nuclear bomb hit it."
Today, all that remains of the house is the "vast arched porte-cochere" (Bence-Jones), which Sir Charles Brett described as "resembling a Roman Arc de Triomphe."

Where have you already looked and have you looked at the search family trees to see if anyone has them in their tree?

Do you know how old James was when he married.? Is he on the 1901 census?

The marriage cert will name his father - if known

I am trying to find any info about my ancestor James Browne who was married to Anne Browne (nee Rushton). They had a daughter, Kate Violet born 15/05/1882.
He worked as a Game Keeper at Drumbanagher House in Poyntzpass, Co. Armagh.
If anyone is able to assist me in furthering my research I will be grateful.
