Hi ErikaH - the mother, Mary Ann Nightingale, did live with a James Smith but they were never married.

His BIRTH name is in the opening post!!!!!!!!!!!

Presumably, the mother married Smith at some stage after the child's birth?
If not, what prompted the boy's surname change?

Stanley Smith of 10 Back Street Luton was sentenced to 5 years at reform school in 1905. According to newspapers, he would have to go to a workhouse until a suitable place could be found for him.
From this point on, I cannot find a record of him.

1911 Census, his mother has listed 3 dead children of which Stanley could be one (I have found 2) but cannot find a record to prove this.

He was born William Stanley Nightingale in 1894, in Northants.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas?
