Find Ancestors

I'm trying to find John Layton in the census but not having much luck.
He was born about 1797 and I have him married to Mary Mills, but that's not confirmed.
He was the governor of Sutton Workhouse in 1843.
He died in 1875 and his will was proved by his daughter Ellen Tipping (nee Layton) in Liverpool.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks Shirley, that's definitely the info I have on Ellen. I've just been doing another search on Ancestry and there's a member tree so I decided to take a look. This member had John born in 1777, so I was a way out if that's correct. The member also has the marriage to Mary Mills as 19 Dec 1796 in St. Helens.
He has Mary dying in 1825 in Sutton and John dying in 1857. If this is correct then that's probably why I can't find him in the census.
I had him dying in 1875 because of the probate I found, proved by daughter Ellen.
These seem to be big discrepancies so I guess I need to dig some more.

He should still be on 1841 and 1851 censuses

BUT….don’t take notice of other trees - use your own PROVEN research.

the Probate record should tell you his date of death
The death registration will show his age

Just had a look at Ellen Tipping (nee Layton) who married John Tipping.
There is a John Tipping, son of John Tipping and Ellen Layton, who died in 1877 at 117 Smithdown Lane. This is the same address shown on the probate record for John Layton that I found.

The Will was proved on 17th Jun 1875 - death date was 28th May 1875

His age at death was 64, so are you 100% certain that Ellen Tipping was this man’s daughter?

Wow, you guys are good.
I know for sure that Ellen Layton married John Tipping.
On the copy of the probate I found it didn't give an age and I guess I assumed it was John Layton (senior) but with the age of 64 it does look like it was his son, born in 1811, who died in 1875. Thanks Erika.
I also had not found the daughter, Hannah, which safc found, so thanks for that.
I usually take other member's trees with a pinch of salt but just thought I'd look and when I saw the big discrepancies it got me searching some more.

The Probate does NOT give an age - that info is on the DEATH record

Thanks. It does get confusing when children are given the same names as parents.
It looks like I was way off in my birth estimate for John senior.

Just looking at all this information again and I think I have it sorted thanks to you all. I've been looking at the children of John Layton and Mary Mills and found something that's got me a bit confused.
I have the birth and baptisms for John Layton and Hannah Layton and also Ellen who married John Tipping. On familysearch there is a birth and baptism for a Mary Layton, but the dates are exactly the same as those for Ellen.

I'm not seeing that baptism on FS.
Can you give more details, please?
