You need to do some research on HMS Formidable. It was transferred to the Channel Fleet in 1908 and paid off in Chatham in the August.
Does the age of the groom and John match?

I am trying to trace my grandfather's birth. His name was either Frederick John Mckay or John Mckay. He was married in Portsmouth in 1908. His address is listed as HMS Formidable. His occupation was Stoker. Naval records have no records of a Frederick John Mckay. Only a John Mckay. His age on the marriage certificate is 27. His father is listed as a licensed victualler. I cannot locate a birth in the Gro in Edinburgh. Or records in Dundee. He served in the Army as well as the Navy but he wasn't fit enough to stay in. I cannot locate a birth for him in the British Isles. I cannot locate a licensed victualler who might have been his father. He is on the 1911 census. He died in 1926 at the age of 45.
