I have Robert and Elizabeth's marriage certificate from 1912 and it does say he is 28 and a widower.
Been trying to find another marriage for him.

The birth that you posted for 1884 is a strong possibility and I think I will send for the certificate.

There's no sign of Mary Ann in England before 1891.
Perhaps she had to leave Ireland when pregnant.

James isn't listed with Mary in 1911, but she's "married", not "widow".
