Just looking at some records and I have found the army records of James Shard. he joined the army 9th september 1884 so just weeks after Robert was born. He was 18 years old , It gives his next of kin as his brothers John Robert Shard living in Widnes and William Shard living in Radcliffe lancashire. John Robert Shard is the father of Elizabeth Shard who later married Robert Monaghan/Smith/Shard.

woke up to this message this morning .

I am descended from Mary Monaghan who gave birth to Robert Shard before she married my gt grandfather James Smith. You are correct that Robert Shard was the illegitimate son of James Shard who I believe was working on the railway in Widnes. Robert Shard was registered as Robert Monaghan when he was born. When his mother married James Smith she changed Roberts surname to Smith. However Robert went on to serve in the Navy under the name Robert Shard and did not to my knowledge use Smith or Monaghan in later life. I know he married and had a son called Harold born in 1922. When Robert marries in St Helens he marries Elizabeth Shard daughter of John Shard. Robert gives his father as James Shard and the witnesses are Shards too so it looks as though he was in contact with his fathers family.

Hello everyone

Thank you so much for all your contributions.
I have learned a little more from a family member and Robert Shard born 1884 Widnes was in the navy. On the 1939 census it says Royal Navy Pensioner.
He died in 1955 . He had gone to the barber for a haircut a few days before Christmas and was knocked down by someone on a bike and he broke a rib that punctured a lung and he died on Christmas day 1955.
His wife Elizabeth left him when the children were small and no one knew what happened to her. She left the children with Robert.
When i have been messaging the only person left in the family that might have some recollection she said that although family said that robert and elizabeth were cousins she now couldnt confirm that and it might have just been a rumour !!!
I have found Robert on 1901 and 1911 cenus in the navy but cant find any documents of his enlisting that might give his next of kin

It was known by family members. Elizabeth's sister in law who was a witness on their marriage later became the mayoress of St Helens. It seems she was said to be embarrassed by Robert and Elizabeth's marriage.

You refer to Robert and Elizabeth as ‘cousins’ - what is the factual basis for this statement?

James is with his grandparents in 1871, along with his siblings - posted above, and also on page 1 by Maddie.
