Edwin was born 17/12/1881 at 6 Cook St, Southampton to Charles Bowles and Agnes Rider.

By 1898 his surname had changed to Stokes and he joined the London and South Western railway. He married Florence Emily Bailey 1909

I cannot find anything about his parents Charles and Agnes, their marriage, nor how/why his surname changed. Its likely Agnes married again to a Stokes but I cannot find any record

On Ancestry someone has added an alternative name for James S Ewins - James S Stokes - and a note saying that Charles was James's stepfather..

I have found the following Death Announcement in The Hampshire County Advertiser Newspaper, February, 6 1886

On the 4th Inst., In Cook St, Southampton, Charles Stokes, aged 31 years

Cook Street, Southampton being that named on Edwin's Birth Certificate
