Safc posted a possible 1871 census (14 Aug 2020 17:18 ).

Unfortunately it's such a common name.

There's also this possibility in 1871. I know it gives POB as Blackburn - but you never know! This man is married:

Annie's marriage banns - mistranscribed;

Annie Barker
in the Manchester, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1754-1930
Name: Annie Barker
Gender: Female
Marriage Age: 19
Event Type: Marriage
Birth Year: abt 1860
Marriage Date: 12 Apr 1879
Marriage Place: Ardwick, St Thomas, Lancashire, England
Parish as it Appears: Ardwick, St Thomas
Father: James Barker, mechanic
Spouse: James Taylor

Witnesses: Agnes and Samuel Cooke.

It doesn't say James was deceased - though of course that doesn't mean he wasn't.

Ancestry doesn't have bann records for the other three marriages mentioned by Mary - just the civil registration records:

Emma in Manchester 1877
Jane in Prestwich 1876
Agnes in Manchester 1878

What a lot of expense and organisation for Elizabeth! A marriage every year for four years!

Mary

Mary Report 14 Aug 2020 19:09

Agnes Ann married Samuel Cooke
Emma married William Elliott
Jane married Alfred peak Welch
But haven't been able to view records to see if it mentioned James the dad
Annie born J qtr 1861 V08d P231 I haven;t seen her marriage as yet.
Annie baptised 15/16/6/1861 at Ancoats of 2,Dryden street parents James and Betsy Barber
James a mechanic

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 14 Aug 2020 16:40

You mentioned a death in 1865.

If you mean in Manchester, these are the only two, neither of which is your James:

BARBER, JAMES 0
GRO Reference: 1865 J Quarter in MANCHESTER Volume 08D Page 221

BARBER, JAMES 47
GRO Reference: 1865 S Quarter in MANCHESTER Volume 08D Page 214

ADDED:
the tree which mentions an 1865 death in Manchester offers four alternative deaths - clearly the tree owner was just guessing, and must have entered that before it was possible to find ages at death on the GRO website - or didn't know about it.
