Thanks again for the info ErikaH Sorry to be a pain but I did have an account on familysearch.org several years ago but when I try to access it or even create a new account I just get a blank screen or an hourglass going around endlessly.

I am not very IT literate but could this be because I am now on a different version of Windows. I am on Windows 8.1 Might this not be compatible with the requirements for accessing familysearch.org?

It was safc who found and posted the 1871 info for you, and she’s also given you Hannah’s maiden name.

I have now discovered that the father of John Edward Gibbons named Edward Gibbons was born in county Mayo Ireland in 1847 and came over to Stockport in 1852 along with his father and mother( named Anthony and Hannah in the 1871 census) and several other siblings. Is there some way of tracing these ancestors back into their Irish roots?

A quick check shows that you're the only GR member with this man in a tree with correct birth year, although one member has the name with no birthplace, which MAY be connected, but you'd have to send a message to find out
