thank yo all that have answered my question. It sure is a mess. Is there anyone on here studying the Hawkless name or does anyone know how I can find someone studying the name.

[Sorry, this post rambles - I was just jotting things down as I went through the record.]

Interestingly, this army record is transcribed as Hawkless, but the image shows the family surname as Candy. And the soldier is William ALEXANDER Candy, not born in 1900 as William Hawkless was.

Very strange.

He and his parents had been resident in NZ for 9 years.
Father Australian, mother NZ.

One page shows his name as William Arthur Candy, bur Arthur has been scored out and Alexander inserted.


I don't see any other records of any sort for a William Alexander Candy, born 1897 in Australia - nor for his named parents John Henry and Cecelia Margaret Candy.

William Hawkless was born 1900 in NZ.

Ah, but -
a later page , from WW2, has him as William Arthur Hawkless.

Another WW2 page is for William Alexander Candy, but at the top of the page someone has written Hawkless, Wm A.
William Alexander Candy's NOK is given as his aunt, Mrs J Hawkless, of Taumaranui.

An even later page has him back as William Arthur Hawkless, with wife Maud Mary, which is correct for William Arthur.

Then the image on Ancestry goes to "New File Begins", and after that there's a page for William Arthur Hawkless, born 4 Nov 1900 in NZ.

The next (and last) page is for William Alexander Candy (1897), but the name has been scored out, and William Arthur Hawkless written over it.

It looks as if the Army has confused William Arthur Hawkless's records with those of William Alexander Candy.
But very odd if the Candy parents' names are also John Henry and Cecelia Margaret.


But apparently Mrs J Hawkless of Taumaranui (who I would assume is Cecelia Margaret) was listed as William Candy's aunt and NOK, as well as Cecelia Margaret (Candy) being named as his mother.


EDIT: Later -

found another record which has a note saying:
"attested under name of Candy, Wm Alex [something] name signed 26.8.19 proved correct, Hawkless, Wm Arthur."

Hmmm - I wonder why he would give a false name , DOB and POB.

I am trying to find any info on the above. He was my wifes grandfather. He was born in Yambuck, Victoria, Australia in 1871 and this is all the info I have on him. I do know he married a Cecelia Margaret Granger Archer in Invercargill in 1900 so he must have moved over to NZ before then.
I have a second request does anyone know Heather Carlyle. I was taking to her about this subject 4 years ago but have lost touch. She lives in Christchurch, New Zaeland. Or did.
