mgnv Report 29 Apr 2020 00:01

The 1911 Census of England and Wales was taken on the night of Sunday, 2 April 1911.
My grandad was in the Territorials, and he had to go to a 2-week training camp each year, usually in August.
He came from Newcastle, a ship-building town.
Most of Lancs had Wakes weeks, which rotated thru the manufacturing towns, but in June-Sept.
My mum told me she got 2-weeks off from school each year in the early 1920s to pick spuds on the town moor.
London's east end got a couple of weeks to go and pick hops in Kent.
However, I don't see anything happening for Beds in early April, and if it did, they'ld be enumerated in their camp

I did an advanced search at:
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
for Missing OR Damaged in archive category rg14 (the 1911 census) and got no hits

From "The Luton Reporter" newspaper, Friday March 30th, 1906 :-

School Attendance Cases.
Arthur Pinney, of Ivy Road, was ordered to send his son, Wilfred, to school regularly, and to pay 2. 6d towards the costs.

It sounds very possible, Olive.

But as so many WW1 army records no longer exist (including Wilfred's, it seems) , there will be no way to confirm it, unfortunately.

It seems that the 1/5th Bedfordshire started out as a Territorial force:

Goodmorning
I may have found out where Wilfred Pinney 1894 Luton Beds On 1911 Census !

This is what I have found on the Internet ?

Luton Times 26th November 1915
The Pinney Brothers of Luton

Wednesday .24 th November 1915
All three Brothers of the Pinney Family of Luton
Have now been wounded in the present Conflict and one has spent over a year as a prisoner of war
Private’s Arthur Pinney of Windsor Street joined the 1st Bedfords eight years ago as a reservist he re turned to his regiment on the outbreak of war And went through some of the heaviest fighting during the first few weeks Before being being wounded in the chest and taken prisoner
Before the war he worked for the British Gelatine Compay

His brothers Percy and Wilfred were both sent out to the Dardanelles with the 1st/5th Bedfords
Percy was wounded at Suvla Bay in the first day of fighting : he has now recovered and sent back to Gallipoli for another go at the Turks
Wilfred was wounded at the same time as his brother : he is still recovering in Hospital at Tooting
Private Bert Payne ,the husband of the Pinney sister Emily Rose ( Pinney)
Has suffered the same fate as as his brother in law Arthur
Another reservist of the1st Bedford He was employed at th Gelatine Works ,he was taken prisoner during the early days of the war

So just wonder if Winifred Pinney Born1894 Luton Beds
Was a reservist too !!! Maybe that’s where he was on 1911 Census
I have copied the artical as written in The Luton Times

AG - re Ancestry at the library/
It may be true what you say, but it's always nice to have a copy of the images if possible.

It depends on what the library computer will let you do, but my library will let me download files into My Documents, and I can use the start button click on it, then on the accessories folder, then open windows explorer (this is the file explorer, not the web browser). Open it and then go to My Documents in it, and I can highlight a block of say 10 downloaded images then right click on the block and send them to a compressed zip file - repeat as needed, then email the zipped files to yourself. When you get home, download the attached zip files to My Documents, say,, and open windows explorer as above, but this time right click on a zip folder and Extract All, then move onto the next zip folder,. It sounds complicated, and it is the first couple of times you do it, but it's a lot easier than downloading a couple of dozen individual image files.

As today is ANZAC day, it's appropriate to mention that 1/5 Bedfords also took part in the Gallipoli campaign, landing at Suvla Bay in Aug 1915. This landing caught the Turks off-guard, and gave the Brits the chance to push inland and turn the Turkish flank. However, the commander was a senior (i.e., old) guy with no command experience, and instead of pushing inland, he spent 3 days consolidating his beach-head, giving the Turks time to occupy all the hills overlooking the beach. He was sacked within a week, but it was too late by then. By October it was clear that Turkey could hang on to the Gallipoli peninsula, and Bulgaria declared war on Serbia, leading to a Serbian collapse, and a harrowing winter retreat thru the mountains to the Dalmatian coast, and the opening of a land route for German and Austrian artillery to reinforce Turkey, and the end of the Gallipoli campaign in Jan 1916.

Re electoral roles
The 1884 Reform Act gave everyone over 21 the right to vote. Of course, it was only the right sort of everyone, so women and other riff-raff were excluded, so no renters - you had to own a home or property worth 10 GBP.
As a consequence of the age and property limitations, the majority of the British army could not vote until the 1918 Reform Act kicked in.

%%%%%%%%%%%%

Army units were required to keep war diaries which detailed the day by day actions of units down to the battalion level, e.g., 1/5 Bedfords.

I already posted the 1910 marriage - with the info you’ve omitted to mention, that he was a widower at the time.

It would be good if you took time to look at all the info posted and consider the possibilities.
