On Ancestry in the Select Cemetery Records I found an entry for William Thomas Leach. He was born 28 March 1857 in Liverpool and died 22 August 1858. The entry shows he was buried on 26 August and money received was 10/6. The whole page of entries appear to be of children. This payment was obviously for the burial and it seems the majority of burials were the same amount, with an occasional more expensive one. I have heard that quite often children were buried in graves where there happened to be space, probably not with family, so do you think this 10/6 is just a standard cost for this sort of burial? |

I can't imagine that it was for anything else. As you say, lots of young babies and children were buried in the coffin of strangers. Even in 1946 by husband's baby brother (12 hours old) was buried with a 2 year old girl who was not a relative. I have no idea if a payment was made though. |
