You are all very clever and very supportive of my rambling family who take twists and turns we couldn't have even thought about! Such is the rich history that we all have - we just need to be interested enough in all of the characters. Very rewarding. A B.I.G. thank you to you all. :-)

The London Gazette record posted by Kathleen (she says "not sure what these records actually are" ) is just the standard thing often put in newspapers (or used to be - I'm not aware of having seen any recently) - after someone's death, inviting creditors (if any) to lodge their claims with the relevant solicitors. It's not necessarily an indication of the deceased person having any debts at the time of death.

Re finding bankruptcy records:
https://tinyurl.com/wmhg4jx
Includes this:
"The best place to start is to search the London Gazette, on The Gazette website, by name of bankrupt. This has notices published by officials to inform creditors about their proceedings.
If you have found an entry in the London Gazette you can try looking for bankruptcy case files at the National Archives but only very few survive.
If you cannot find a case file you will need to browse various register and enrolment series that will normally only provide brief formal entries. They will confirm if a bankruptcy took place, but will not provide much detail.
From 1842 district bankruptcy courts were established for cases outside London. Case files and some bankruptcy registers from these should be at local archives"
I can't see any mention of his bankruptcy in the London Gazette:
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/
As he doesn't seem to be on the 1891 or 1901 censuses, perhaps the bankruptcy was declared when he was abroad with the army - not sure if that would affect where the bankruptcy would be recorded.
However, from the National Archives paragraph above, it look unlikely that a record will have survived.

Thanks Rambling. I have the full transcript of his Will. The portion of the estate for ALTB is directed to be held by the Trustees and that if ALTB queries the Will in any way at any time, then as far as I can make out his portion is to be withheld from him. Guess he still wasn't too good with money ……..
Any more suggestions as to his route to bankruptcy, please?
