thanks for your reply.
I tried a combination of ways to try and find an answer,I wondered too if his father is a Richard Gardiner and his mum's surname is Cowley,but maybe no marriage took place.
So his dad may be a brother of John Valentine Gardiner who adopted him.And he would be his nephew as stated in 1911.Or is Emma ,his mother,a relative of John Valentines wife Sarah Ann Cowley?
I think I'll have to go back to the census and see if I can find them.

His birth registration shows no Mother's maiden name, so would suggest No Father is named on the Birth certificate.

A copy of the certificate would name the Mother

I was going to suggest that the Gardiner middle name might suggest the Father's surname, but looks as though John Gardiner and Sarah Ann married before the birth

Can anyone help me to find any more info on this chap please? I have that his parents were Richard and Emma,and he was born about 1895 in Sheffield.He's listed as being adopted son with John Valentine Gardiner and his wife Sarah Ann Cowley in 1901 census,and as his nephew in 1911.
John Valentine Gardiner's brother in law -John Cowley born in 1875,-lives with them for several years after his wife dies in 1899 when their daughter is born.I believe John Cowley could be a relative of ours,but would need to do more research.
