In the 1940 census, he is a seaman, maritime.
The 1930 immigration record given by ErikaH sailing on the Metapan can be viewed at https://www.libertyellisfoundation.org.
You can view the ship history and the ship's manifest which has George's nearest relative named as his mother, Carolina of #9 Marine Parade, Pill, Somerset. He was an employee of the United Fruit Co. NY City and was a deck steward. He was joining a friend, ? Vanhaden.
