Thanks for the help everyone. I'll probably have to take the hike to Suffolk/Cambridge and look through records to see what I can find. An adventure for the future. I've used Freereg, purchased the Suffolk Baptism index for the relevant area/ period of time and various other routes. Checking for Wills is a great idea ! I believe I may have one for an Obadiah but not sure which Obadiah ! It seems Siggs were called Matthew, John or Obadiah; Generation after generation and they shared the names amongst different lines to add to the confusion. I think we were to poor for gravestones ! |

Do you know where any of them were buried? - There may be something on the gravestones , especially if they had a 'family grave'. |

The link posted by Malyon is just to somebody's tree, so not necessarily correct - maybe just a guess on the part of the tree owner. |

if john and ann had children there might be a clue if they were named after his parents |

If both Johns could write, it is just possible that using original documents you might be able to distinguish between them or see a match, for example as witnesses to their children's marriage. |

In my Siggs tree their is a puzzle. John Siggs married 1738 to Ann Wiffen. He is either John, son of Matthew and Elizabeth bap. 6th Dec 1715 or John, son of Obadiah and Elizabeth bap. 31st Mar 1717. Both St. Mary's Haverhill. Apart from other people's public trees(!) I can find no way of proving he is the son of one or the other. How can I go about doing this ? Would a parish record detail the parents of the newly weds or was that down to the local vicar and whether he could he bothered ? |
