I have a john Yates a Labourer/Tailor of Wigan who married Jane Appleton.

I am wondering if this could be his baptism although looking at the map (Google) it does appear to be quite far away - in my opinion.

The first child of the couple is Richard 1810 of Wigan

Tailor to Labourer or vice versa is a bit of a change

So which baptism are you looking at.

Have you found him 1851 to give a place of birth and perhaps a more accurate year of birth. Above could make him 55-59 years of age

I do have a Alice 1825 a sibling to Edmund. Another Alice died at birth 1820

In Jan/Feb 1806, there were 51 marrs at Widan All Saints, and 45 in Jan/Feb 1808.
Wm Bancks is a witness on 50 of these in 1806, and 43 in 1808.
I would term him a "professional witness".
