I thought that about his occupation how did you find his occupation on the marriage certificate?
No matter what is found They don't want us to find them in 1881 I've had a word with a relative she doesn't know anything as the families didn't get on so they had nothing to do with them
Thank you for all your time and help but I think it will stay a mystery

Chris :)
06 February 1891 - Sheffield Evening Telegraph - Sheffield, Yorkshire,
Boxing ILLNESS OF FAMOUS SPRINTER. James Carlan, of Sheffield, the famous sprint runner, is still lying in a dangerous condition, in No 3A Ward of the Withington Hospital, near Manchester, suffering from paralysis of both legs. Carlan writes us that he would be extremely glad if any of his old friends could furnish him with the address of any of his relatives.
11 April 1890 - Sheffield Independent - Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
(another article on him refers to him 'having a wife, and five little children'... was seen in Crumpsall Infirmary, near Manchester, lying in a bed, suffering from paralysis of lower part of body, with both legs being useless. He had once jumped clean over Hyde Park wall, Sheffield. The doctors were to order an electropathic belt, but he had no funds to purchase)
(also, Pedestrian, Trainer)
(google bringing up quite a few references, Sheffield, pedestrianism, one famous one, being George Littlewood)

Apparently Maria married John Ramsbottom Maria is? the sister of Beatrice who married Foster Hornby my grandfathers brother. The relation I'm in touch with didn't have any thing to do with the Carlan, Another person I'm in touch with is Maria's granddaughter, she has photos but nothing for her until her marriage and remembering she refered to her as nanny Mac (Mac short for Macdonell her 2nd husband) I thought the 1881 census would link the family together and find out if Mary Ellen And Maria were the same person or two different people
But it would appear the 1881 census is missing for them!!

I think Mary Ellen has been taken from trees on Ancestry, which show a Mary Ellen in the family - but (as Shirley pointed out earlier) it's a mistake. This seems to be the birth and death of that child:

Yes I saw that and some one has it on ancestry who is the gr granddaughter BUT the fathers name was Jacob ? so I'm not convinced, Apparently according to Who do you think you are last night the catholic register was written in Latin and Maria Anne was Mary Ann in English,
Also all the children were born in Manchester
I don't think we will find the 1881 census Thank you all for you time and all the info you have found for me I'll close this thread now and go to the other one
