If born in England / Wales there are 9 Williams born 1815 +/- 2 years on the 1861 census for instance and 10 Johns in 1861 b 1860 +/- 1 year.
It would help if you could give more details initially.
Is this your family - the only one I see in 1861 with a William born c 1815 and a John born c1860 (but then you say you "think" William's son was John)
