Thank you Kath, certainly seemed to change from Windross to William, can't say I blame him though!!

On the image of the 1851 census where Windross is 1 month old, his birthplace is given as Thornton on the Hill, Yorkshire, which is about 2 miles north of Easingwold, and that is where the family are living.

His birth was just registered as Windross. Perhaps he took the name William later.
