I've found possible father James PATON in 1901 census as a widower:

Dear Maddie,

That looks like it might just be a candidate for William's father in the 1891 census - innkeeper is definitely the correct occupation. I wonder whether we can trace when this James PATON died? It would have to be prior to 1921 to match the information on William's marriage certificate.

I will investigate your 3x Scottish census finds further.

I also think the 1891 St Pancras census for William could indeed be him.

Hi Malyon,

I see your train of thought. He may indeed have been married previously, that might be the reason he didn't marry Florence Gertrude DANIELL until 1921. However I don't think that 1891 Scotland census find is him. The occupation is not a match.

Your birth registration from Florence Gertrude DANIELL is correct. She was born on 9 Aug 1874 at 27 Warren Street, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England

Widowed and retired - living with people with surnames PASCOE and ACKERMAN - no idea if he was related to a any of these people
